When I think about my trip to Malta, I can never quite believe how underrated that country is. Especially considering that it’s utterly beautiful, so historic, and has some pretty incredible beaches. I love Malta and, if you’re planning a trip to this Mediterranean gem, I just know that you’re going to love it.
When we visited Malta, one of the main things I wanted to know was where to stay. I was travelling as a group of 6, so I needed to accommodate that. We also chose not to drive – which turned out fine as the public transport was easy to navigate – and wanted one great place where we could base ourselves for the entire trip.
Luckily we had lots of options. Malta isn’t a huge island, so you can get from one side to the other fairly easily. However, I did find that the different areas of Malta all had different vibes – hence this guide!

Where to stay in Malta
So, without further ado, let’s go over the best places to stay in Malta.
1. Valletta – best for being in the centre of the action
Valletta is the capital of Malta. It’s a fairly small city but can get pretty busy (especially in the summer months), and there’s a ton to do here.
The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has plenty of history. You’ll find palaces, Baroque architecture, fortified walls, winding cobbled streets, and elegant churches.
You can climb the hills and explore some of the gardens (I love the Upper Barrakka Gardens) and there are lots of viewpoints in Valletta where you can look out across the ocean. You can also visit the Three Cities from here, learn all about their history, and see several impressive fortresses.
A few of the top attractions in Valletta include majestic landmarks such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the imposing Grand Master’s Palace. You’ll also find plenty of bustling markets, quaint cafes, and lively festivals, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich heritage and traditions.
You’ll also find that the majority of large events on the main island will take place here. For instance, we spent New Year’s Eve in Malta, and Valletta was where they held the fireworks display.
The Osborne Hotel
This stylish hotel is the perfect location in Valletta – not too far from the ocean and not too far from the centre! You’ll find a delicious breakfast, friendly staff who will be able to help you with whatever you need, and a lovely rooftop pool to relax in after a day exploring the city.
The rooms are very nicely designed with wooden flooring, neutral colours and elaborate headboards. The beds are super comfortable, and you’ll find a tea and coffee-making station and squashy armchairs.
Many of the rooms also feature stunning views over Valletta and you’ll find a gym in the downstairs area – ideal for getting in those steps before lazing at the beach!
Despite all these features, the hotel is also pretty affordable and ideal for couples.
2. Rabat – the best place to stay for a historical feel
Rabat is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful areas of Malta. The charming old town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets with towering buildings on either side. At times, it felt like I was walking through a honey-coloured brickwork maze!
This, coupled with the flowers everywhere, and the beautiful old-fashioned buildings make this area one of the most romantic places to stay in Malta.
It’s also really affordable and full of cute, self-catering apartments and houses. This was originally what drew us to the area.
In terms of the best things to do in Rabat, the main draw is simply the area itself. You can spend a lot of time getting lost down the pretty little streets. However, there are also several catacombs – St Paul’s Catacombs are the most famous – St Paul’s Grotto, St Paul’s Church, St Agatha Crypt, and much more.
There is a very impressive collection of historical sites and ruins in Rabat. It’s also within easy walking distance of Mdina – but we’ll get to that in a moment!
Casa Melita
This was where we stayed during our week on the island and it’s definitely one of the best places to stay in Malta – especially if you love traditional accommodation.
Casa Melita is a little 3-bedroom house tucked away down one of the winding alleyways in Rabat. It was a great base for our week on the island and I loved the traditional feel.
Inside is old-fashioned, but we found it quite charming. It’s also surprisingly spacious. There’s a large entrance lobby which leads to a kitchen and living area.
There were 3 bedrooms upstairs and two bathrooms and a further spiralling staircase led to a rooftop garden which would’ve been delightful in the summer months.
We visited during the winter months, so didn’t get a chance to use it. There was also a downstairs courtyard area with a patio that we didn’t get to use either which was a shame since a BBQ here would’ve been lovely.
3. Mdina – best area for Game of Thrones fans
Located within walking distance of Rabat, Mdina is another of the best places to stay in Malta. This is another very historic part of the island. Nestled on a hilltop in the heart of Malta, Mdina is a captivating medieval town.
Fans of the popular TV show Game of Thrones might recognise this place as it was a well-known filming location on the island.
Known as the ‘Silent City’ is a very peaceful place – well, when it’s not crowded with tourists, that is! That means that staying here is one of the best ways to view the area, as Mdina is the ideal place to unwind during the early morning and late evenings.
You’ll find narrow streets, towering limestone buildings, and towering fortified walls. The ancient citadel also offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Just like Rabat, you’ll also find palaces, churches, and hidden courtyards to explore here.
The Xara Palace Relais
For a wonderful luxury hotel in Malta, this is the perfect place to stay. The Xara Palace Hotel exudes a timeless charm and is a completely beautiful place to stay in Malta. It’s a 5* hotel, so you’re almost guaranteed luxury.
The spacious rooms are elegant with large comfy beds and free-standing bathtubs. For the ultimate luxury, go for the Superior Suite which has a terrace overlooking the Maltese countryside, and a private hot tub where you can admire the views with a glass of wine.
You’ll also find an outdoor pool, a gym, a fabulous restaurant serving delicious gourmet dishes, and a cocktail bar, perfect for an evening drink.
4. St. Paul’s Bay – best for swimming and outdoor activities
Found along Malta’s beautiful North coast, Saint Paul’s Bay is a famous seaside town best known for its sprawling promenade that stretches all the way to Qawra. It’s one of the best places to stay in Malta if you enjoy less touristy getaways but still like to have lots of things to do.
A popular holiday destination with the local Maltese people, you’ll likely spend your days exploring the village, swimming, snorkelling, trying watersports, horse riding, and walking along the coast in search of the best views.
The largest beach in St. Paul’s Bay is Ta’ Fra Ben. This rocky beach offers excellent swimming and a naturally-formed rock pool. If you prefer sandy beaches, Perched Beach is a better option.
Wignacourt Tower, Is-Simar Nature Reserve, and Kennedy Grove are among the area’s points of interest. If you can, time your visit with Festa, a traditional Maltese village feast, too!
Seaview Hotel
Couples looking for a romantic holiday along the Maltese coast will love Seaview Hotel, including the fact that it’s adult-only. This elegant hotel offers panoramic views of St. Paul’s Islands and features two swimming pools, a stunning rooftop terrace, a restaurant, and a rooftop bar.
The modern rooms have air conditioning, free WiFi, en-suite bathrooms, and TVs, and most offer sea views. In terms of location, the hotel is only a 5-minute walk from a wide range of bars, restaurants, and shops.

5. Marsaxlokk – a good place for Maltese culture and history
Marsaxlokk is a traditional Maltese fishing village in the Southeastern region of Malta. This small village is most famous for its vibrant harbour, where tourists can find the iconic Iuzzu boats and other larger vessels.
These distinctive boats are the main attraction in Marsaxlokk. They’re painted in primary colours and, in keeping with traditions that date back to Phoenician times, feature the eye of Horus on their bow.
When you’re not admiring these boats, you’ll find yourself exploring the historic architecture. Fort Delimara, a unique cliff-face fortress built in the 1800s and St. Lucien Tower, an impressive polygonal fort built in the 17th century, are fine examples.
Another popular attraction is the Marsaxlokk Fish Market, where you’ll find fresh-off-the-boat seafood and produce.
Head to St. Peter’s Pool when you want to kick back and relax. This beautiful natural pool is perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
South Wind Guesthouse
South Wind Guesthouse is a stunning accommodation option in the heart of Marsaxlokk. Despite its luxurious comfortable rooms and central location, this guesthouse is a fantastic option for budget travellers.
Just 700 metres from II-Ballut Reserve Beach and just over 1 mile from St. Peter’s Pool, South Wind offers modern rooms and villas with sea views and sun terraces. 6. Sliema – best for Mediterranean vibes and a lively atmosphere
If you’re visiting Malta in search of Mediterranean warmth, culture, and lots of fun, Sliema is perfect. Once a small fishing village, Sliema is now a lively seaside town with a promenade that offers lots of entertainment.
Along the 1.2-mile promenade, you’ll find designer shops, bars and restaurants, historical architecture, and a handful of swimming spots, so you won’t be short of things to do.
Keep your eyes peeled for the II-Fortizza (an old British military installation come restaurant), the Art-Deco terraced townhouses, and Grandmaster De Redin’s 17th-century watchtowers.
Qui-Si-Sana Beach is a popular destination for beachgoers. Here, they can enjoy the turquoise waters and admire the surrounding architecture.
At night, Sliema is popular with partygoers. The Exiles Beach Club, the Hole in the Wall Pub, and Black Gold Saloon are just a few places to party the night away.
The Londoner Hotel Sliema
The Londoner Hotel Sliema is a gorgeous hotel with affordable luxury, convenience, and sea views. It’s just off the Sliema promenade and only 700 yards from Qui-Si-Sana Beach.
Other nearby attractions include Qui Si-Sana Gardens, St. George’s Square, and the Point Shopping Mall, so you can easily access the main attractions.

7. St. Julian’s – best for resort holidays and nightlife
Partygoers looking for somewhere to relax in the day and party at night should stay in St. Julian’s, a lively seaside town 10 minutes drive away from Sliema.
Offering the perfect blend of Maltese fishing village charm and tourist entertainment, you’ll find everything from historic landmarks and beautiful beaches to lively bars and big resorts in St. Julian’s.
During the day, rest easy on Balluta Bay Beach and wander around the small town centre, admiring the Latin architecture. Don’t miss Spinola Palace, built in 1688 and the neo-gothic Carmelite Church.
If you’d prefer more action, try jet skiing, parasailing, or kayaking at Sun and Fun Water Sports instead.
At night, take to the streets and enjoy some of Malta’s best bars and nightclubs. Footloose is one of the most popular destinations. Alternatively, enjoy a romantic meal at Rosami At The Villa, a Michelin-star restaurant overlooking the sea.
Hilton Malta
If you’re planning a luxury resort town holiday in St. Julian’s, you should stay at Hilton Malta. Perfect for honeymooners, this seafront 5-star resort hotel offers modern decor, high-class facilities, and magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea.
You’ll find outdoor and indoor pools, a spa, tennis courts, a fitness centre, and two restaurants on-site. The hotel is only 850 yards from Balluta Bay Beach, so it’s pretty central, too!
Regarding bedrooms, Hilton offers deluxe rooms and suites. The spa suite has a roof terrace with a hot tub, and every room has a balcony, ensuite bathroom, and seating area.
8. Mellieha – best for sandy beaches and an authentic feel
Next, we have Mellieha, a popular tourist destination that maintains most of its traditional fishing village charm and ancient history. However, this vibrant village is best known for its sandy beaches.
Found at Malta’s Northern tip, Mellieha is home to several pristine golden-sand beaches with crystal clear waters and plenty of space to sunbathe. Għadira Bay and Golden Bay are two of the best.
When you’re not soaking up the sun, learn more about Maltese culture by strolling around the village. The Parish Church, Our Lady Of The Grotto, and The Sanctuary are all major attractions.
Be sure to visit the Mellieha Air Raid Shelter, one of the largest bomb shelters in Malta, too. After walking around the village, you should start exploring its surroundings.
The Ghadira Nature Reserve and Majjistral Nature and History Park offer a countryside escape, while the 1980 Popeye Village movie set is a pretty unique experience.
DOMS Boutique Living
Accommodation options in Mellieha don’t get much better than DOMS Boutique Living. Located less than a mile from Mellieha Bay Beach, this 4-star hotel offers rooms in the heart of the village.
The Parish Church is right next door. You can see it from the rooftop pool.
DOMS also has an on-site restaurant and a bar. There are four types of rooms to choose from, ranging from Standard Double to Deluxe Suites with Spa Baths.
Every room has a modern interior, air conditioning, a large bed, and a private bathroom, and breakfast is included with each booking.
9. Gozo – best for quiet island life and hiking
Finally, we have Gozo, a historic island sitting off Malta’s Northern coastline. Gozo is only separated from the island of Malta by a small channel but has a much slower pace of life that’s perfect for a quiet retreat.
The island is also a popular hiking destination thanks to its scenic landscape. Several easy hiking trails are available along the coast and almost around the whole island.
Two popular trails are the Saltpans Walk and the Xlendi Walk. Meanwhile, Ramla Bay’s sandy beach is your best bet for sunbathing and swimming.
Gozo is also steeped in rich history, and Victoria (the island’s capital) and its Citadel are the best places to experience it.
Inside the fortified stone walls, visit the Gran Castello Historic House and the prehistoric sculptures in the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. Other historic buildings on Gozo include Gozo Cathedral, the Old Prison, and the Ġgantija Temple ruins.
The Duke Boutique Hotel
If you want to explore Victoria during your visit to Gozo, I recommend staying at The Duke Boutique Hotel. This stylish and elegant hotel is located in the centre of Victoria and overlooks the Citadel.
Several room options are available, ranging from budget double rooms to a presidential suite. A delicious breakfast with local dishes is served daily, and many local restaurants are nearby.
All rooms feature a classic contemporary design and come with air conditioning, a private bathroom with a shower or bathtub, a TV, and WiFi. The Duke also offers activities like snorkelling, diving, and horse riding.
Final Thoughts on the Best Places to Stay in Malta
In my opinion, Mata can be as budget or a bougie as you make it. You can stay in a modern 5* hotel with a stunning private hot tub and balcony overlooking the countryside or you can stay in a traditional house down a tiny alleyway full of rustic charm.
If you’re visiting Malta for the first time, I recommend staying in either Valetta or St Julian’s. If you’re travelling as a couple, I recommend Silema, Mdina, or Gozo, and if you’re travelling as a family, I recommend Valetta or St Paul’s Bay.
However, you can’t really go wrong, no matter where you choose to stay in Malta. The area is full of great accommodation options, and you can very easily travel around the island via taxis or public transport.
Plus, Malta is a destination that can be visited all year round. We visited in December and had lovely weather and winter sun. But, if you’re after a sun tan, it can also be one of the best places to visit in July or August.
