The Best Place to Stay in Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes was the first trip I went on without any grown-ups! It feels weird saying that now after having travelled to so many different destinations since. But I remember those early days of planning my first trip and one of the most important things for me was deciding the best place to stay in Rhodes.

This was the first trip that I actually planned on my own, so I wanted it to be perfect. It was more than 5 years ago now, so not even particularly long ago and I feel like I’ve achieved so much since then. But that first time getting on an airplane with just my boyfriend was a pretty big moment for me.

Rhodes is a beautiful Greek Island, the largest of the Dodecanese, and a delightful place to visit. Full of some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, fascinating ancient history and a charming Old Town, Rhodes is the perfect combination of nature, antiquity, and traditional whitewashed Greek beauty.

If you’re considering visiting this wonderful island (I honestly can’t recommend it enough), here are my top tips on the best place to stay in Rhodes.

What is the best place to stay in Rhodes?

Now, when it comes to where to stay in Rhodes, there are lots of options. And I mean lots. There are remote beachy places, bustling own towns, the ‘party’ side of the island, the touristy places, and the more local areas that are ideal for getting a taste of authentic Greek life. 

Overall, when it comes to where to stay in Rhodes, I think that it first depends on how long you are on the island, and also what you want to see.

We loved the Old Town for its history and traditional Greek life. But we loved Faliraki and other towns like Lindos for a mixture of beauty, some traditional life, and being closer to the ocean.

Where did I stay in Rhodes?

Of course, being me, I wanted a taste of all of the island, but for the 10 days I was there, I couldn’t possibly stay everywhere. In the end, I settled for staying in a little apartment in the old town for a few days before moving to a villa in the beachside town of Faliraki. This turned out to be just perfect for us.

The Old Town was wonderful. It was charming with cobbled streets and winding little alleyways. There was a great selection of restaurants on our doorstep, and so much history to explore.

It felt like we had stepped back in time. We stayed in a secluded little self-catering apartment off the beaten tourist track, so we had plenty of privacy and it was very affordable too.

However, it was definitely the right move to only stay there for a few days. Whilst the old town was wonderful, everyone wants a little bit of sea and sand on a trip to a Greek island, right? Although the Old Town is close to a few beaches, we also wanted a sea view.

Plus, Rhodes is one of the larger Greek islands, so we wanted to be able to see as much of it as possible in the short time we had there. So, it made sense to have more than one base.

So, after about 4 days, we moved to Faliraki. This gave us just enough time in the old town to see all the sights before we headed to the beach. In Faliraki, we also stayed in a self-catering place, but it was within walking distance of both the beach and the town.

This meant we could access the ocean yet restaurants were also within walking distance, which is so important when looking for the best place to stay in Rhodes.

The best place to stay in Rhodes for couples

This once again depends on what you like to do as a couple. We like to see a mixture of history and natural beauty while we’re away. But we know plenty of other couples who simply like to lounge on the beach. 

Because of this, I’d say the best place to stay in Rhodes for couples would be either Pefkos or Lindos. Both these destinations are ideal for a romantic getaway, but, with Lindos in particular, you also have a mixture of history as well.

So, without further ado, these are my favourite options for the best place to stay in Rhodes, Greece:

1. Rhodes Old Town 

My favourite area to stay in Rhodes was Rhodes Old Town. It was the most traditional and reasonably priced. It felt like much more of a slice of ancient Greece than the rest of the island. You’ll be completely immersed in history, and there are so many great things to do in Rhodes Old Town!  

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights and the Street of the Knights, which is a lovely 600-meter street with ancient inns, are definitely worth seeing and both are located in the Old Town.

Plus, the entire town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You may spend hours simply strolling the cobbled lanes and chatting with the locals.

Rhodes Town offers everything you need in an ancient town. You’ll find history, charm, and easy access to public transportation, along with a wide variety of delicious eateries for your evening meals and is close to two lovely beaches.

The best place to stay in Rhodes Old Town

We stayed in a small apartment called Muses tucked away down a cobbled alleyway and it was perfect. Here are a few of the other top hotel options in the old town:

• Attiki Hotel: A rustic and charming hotel in the old town centre.
• 10GR Boutique Hotel and Wine Bar: A gorgeous 5* hotel with a unique building, a sauna, jacuzzi baths in the rooms, and a fantastic restaurant.
• DECAN Concept Boutique Estate: A beautifully designed hotel with patterned rooms, chandeliers, and a delightful cocktail bar.

2. Faliraki 

Rhodes’ party haven, Faliraki is ideal for people wanting to get a taste of the island’s more vibrant side. Although it’s a lot of fun, it lacks a lot of authenticity. If you’re searching for a more traditional slice of Greece, this may not be the place for you.

Nonetheless, Faliraki is still a very popular destination on the island, and it’s especially appealing to younger people and couples.

In Faliraki, you’ll discover a wide range of bars, lively nightlife, great beaches, and other tourist-oriented activities. The area is much less historic. But other areas of the island (such as Lindos) are easy to reach by bus if you fancy going there on a day trip.

Faliraki also has several excellent dining options. This includes some of the finest restaurants in the area, serving everything from Greek classics to international cuisines from all around the world.

Not only that, but you don’t have to stay in Faliraki itself if you don’t want to. There are plenty of options for entertainment beyond the city centre, but still within walking distance of attractions.

The best place to stay in Faliraki

We stayed in Kathara Bay Apartments – a beautiful private apartment located outside of the town centre. It was still close enough to walk into the main city, but far enough away so that we weren’t disturbed by the bustle!

We also had a beautiful little private pool, which just added to the appeal! Here are a few more of the best places to stay in Faliraki:

3. Lindos 

The most adorable and one of the best places to stay in Rhodes is without a doubt Lindos. There is a beautiful village with whitewashed houses, a hilltop acropolis, and some of the finest beaches on the island!

In my opinion, a one-day trip to Lindos is well worth the effort and can be easily reached from most of the island by bus.

Lindos has all that you could desire in a Greek village and is quite beautiful. The cobbled lanes are lined with large flower pots, olive trees, and unusual tavernas, as well as some of the brightest churches you’ll ever see.

The Acropolis of Lindos is difficult to miss, although it does require a fairly steep climb up a hill! If you don’t want to walk up a hill in the heat (I don’t blame you – it was tough!), you can always hire a donkey instead.

Alternatively, if you’re not in the mood for a long walk, go to St Paul’s Bay for a dip in the crystal-clear water of Rhodes’ most beautiful beach.

As well as natural wonders, historical sites, and ancient Greek architecture, Lindos also has fantastic bars, restaurants, and nightlife to offer – it’s pretty picture-perfect!

4. Pefkos 

Pefkos is a more low-key option than Rhodes’ other resorts. It’s suitable for the older generation or couples who prefer a quieter romantic retreat. The town will enchant you with its perfect beaches, sun beds, and plenty of ice cream.

It’s also irrelevant whether you’re looking for a little of Greece’s traditional flavour or more modern amenities. With its traditional tavernas beckoning you in or delectable restaurants with a view, Pefkos will provide a well-deserved rest that you won’t soon forget.

5. Kolymbia 

If you like stunning views, Kolymbia’s beautiful mountain backdrop will be right up your alley! If you don’t fancy the Old Town but Faliraki is a little too touristy, Kolymbia will also be ideal.

This lovely seaside town mixes old wooden fishing boats with cobbled lanes and modern buildings, as well as a slightly calmer nightlife.

A picturesque harbourfront is a great place to while away the hours with the local fishermen and golden sand beaches aren’t overly crowded. The village’s location on the island is also extremely convenient.

It is located halfway between Rhodes Old Town and Lindos, making it simple to travel between the two. Faliraki is only a short distance away too. So, if you’re visiting Rhodes with the family, you won’t have to go far to visit the huge Faliraki Waterpark!

Overall, Kolymbia’s combination of antiquity and modernity, as well as its nearly ideal position for exploring the island further, make it one of Rhodes’ finest places to stay.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Rhodes on a budget, Ialysos is a wonderful spot. It’s one of the most affordable resorts in Rhodes.

Located on the eastern coast of Greece, this charming seaside resort has something for everyone. The sandy beach is backed by hotels and a wide range of eateries, tavernas, and a wonderfully calm atmosphere.

Ialysos is also a great option if you’re looking for a slice of the local culture. Once you reach the original town, you’ll discover a vibrant Greek charm, historic beauty, and locals going about their daily lives.

For the ideal of both worlds and with the benefit of being reasonably priced, this is one of the best places to stay in Rhodes.

The best place to stay in Ialysos

Here are the 3 places I recommend for a stay in Ialysos.

• Matoula Beach: An affordable 4* hotel for families. You’ll find clean, comfortable rooms, an outdoor pool, a children’s play area, and an on-site restaurant and bar.
• Cook’s Club Ialysos: This 4* hotel is incredibly stylish. The rooms are beautiful, it’s right next to a bus stop so gives easy access into town, and it’s not too big, so has a more intimate feel.
• White and Blue Luxury Suites: For a luxury self-catering stay, this 3-bedroom villa is stylish, and modern, and has sea views from the private pool.

So, which area in Rhodes is best to stay In?

If you’re visiting Rhodes for the first time, there are two places I’d recommend: either Rhodes Old Town or Lindos.

Rhodes Old Town is ideal for people who love history. Some of the best attractions on the island are there. Plus, the cobbled streets are so beautiful and you can find a range of affordable accommodation options.

In contrast, Lindos has the traditional whitewashed village feel that many people look for when visiting the Greek Islands. It’s definitely more expensive than the old town, but you’ll also have easy access to the Acropolis (a must-visit in Rhodes), and several stunning beaches.

If you’re travelling with a family, I’d recommend Ialysos and if you’re after nightlife, head to Faliraki.

You could also always do what we did if you can’t decide and split your stay between two different places. This is a great way to see more of the island and trust me, there are a lot of fantastic things to see in Rhodes!
