Holafly eSIM Review – My Honest Experience Using It in Morocco
If you’re looking for a reliable eSIM for your next getaway, here’s my honest Holafly review after using it during our trip to Marrakesh!
Staying connected is pretty important in today’s modern age. Although in reality, it’s even more important when you’re travelling, as trying to navigate a destination you’ve never been to without the internet is pretty tricky.
Over the past few years, I’ve tried a few different ways of staying connected abroad, from portable WiFi devices to local SIM cards and other eSIM providers.
But after constantly running into issues with slow connections, patchy coverage, and running out of data at the worst possible moments, I decided to try Holafly for our recent trip to Morocco.
And honestly? I was pretty impressed.
From navigating the chaotic souks of Marrakesh to booking last-minute day trips whilst on a coach ride to our hotel, having unlimited data throughout made the trip feel so much less stressful.
We didn’t have to hunt for public WiFi, worry about roaming charges, or panic about running out of data while trying to navigate somewhere completely new.
So, after using Holafly throughout our Morocco trip, I wanted to put together an honest review covering how it worked, the features I actually found useful, and whether I think it’s genuinely worth using for travel.
So if you’re considering using an eSIM for your next adventure, here’s my honest review of Holafly and everything you need to know.

What actually IS an eSIM?
If you’ve never used an eSIM before, it’s essentially a digital SIM card that allows you to activate mobile data on your phone without needing a physical SIM.
Instead of buying a local SIM card when you land or paying expensive roaming charges abroad, you simply install the eSIM before your trip and connect as soon as you arrive.
Holafly is one of the leading eSIM providers currently available and offers unlimited data plans in 200+ destinations worldwide, alongside monthly global plans for frequent travellers.

What initially drew me to Holafly was the fact that you don’t need to constantly worry about running out of data while travelling – something I’d experienced quite a lot with other providers in the past.
And honestly, the convenience alone makes a huge difference. Gone are the days of taking your earring out at the airport to remove your physical SIM card and then spending your entire trip praying you don’t lose it!
With an eSIM, everything is done digitally, meaning you can stay connected almost instantly without the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards.
Once it’s set up, you use your phone exactly as normal – maps, WhatsApp, booking apps, social media, Google searches… everything just works.
As someone who travels a lot, it’s completely changed the way I travel.
Why I started using eSIMs when I travel
I’ve had a pretty negative experience with trying to stay connected to the internet when I travel in the past.
For a trip to Cyprus in 2019, I bought a WiFi device and a data SIM from a shop in the UK before I left. However, the data was so unreliable that I might as well not have bothered!
Plus, on top of that, I ended up forgetting to cancel the data SIM contract, which led to a huge confusion with the company and a black mark on my credit score… never doing that again!!

So, I tried to rely on airport WiFi, hotel WiFi, random cafés, or, of course, a physical SIM at the airport, which I hated because it was so fiddly and annoying.
But, there’s nothing worse than landing in a completely new country and not being able to check directions, message someone to let them know you’re safe, or even check the hotel booking confirmation on your emails.
I also found myself constantly trying to conserve data or avoid roaming charges, which meant I wasn’t using my phone naturally while travelling.

Once I started using eSIMs, travelling instantly became so much easier. I could navigate new cities properly, look things up on the go, hotspot to other devices when needed, and stay connected without needing to hunt for WiFi everywhere.
Why I used Holafly for Morocco
We recently spent 5 days exploring Marrakesh and the surrounding areas. After hearing how unreliable public WiFi could be, I decided to use Holafly for the trip, and I was so glad that I did!
Marrakesh is incredible, but it’s also chaotic in the best possible way.
The souks are like a maze, the streets are constantly busy, and we were moving around a lot between the city, hotel, attractions, and day trips to other parts of Morocco.

Having data the entire time made everything feel so much less stressful.
We used maps constantly while navigating the souks, booked activities online while travelling around, checked restaurant recommendations on the go, and stayed connected from the moment we landed at the airport right through to the middle of the desert.

As someone who travels frequently, I also loved how easy the setup process was compared to buying local SIM cards.

Features I actually found useful
But there are loads of eSIM options available, so what makes Holafly so special? Well, I’ve tried several different ways of staying connected while travelling in the past; however, many things about Holafly genuinely stood out to me.
Unlimited data
This was probably my favourite feature.
With previous eSIMs I’ve used, you had to keep an eye on how much data you had and remember to top it up again when it got low.
But the frustrating thing was that you often needed the internet to top it up, so if it ran out when you were in the middle of nowhere, you were stuck!

With Holafly, you get unlimited data, and I loved not having to constantly check how much data I had left.
This meant that we could use Google Maps (which we needed all the time!), upload Instagram stories, search for restaurants, book tours, and generally use our phones normally without stressing about data limits.
Easy setup
I was expecting the setup process to be complicated, but it actually only took a couple of minutes.
I installed everything at Gatwick before we flew, and Holafly connected pretty much straight away when we landed in Morocco.

Not having to queue for a SIM card at the airport was honestly such a relief (although we did have to queue at a cash machine instead, but that’s a different story!)
Kept my WhatsApp number
One thing I really liked was that I could still keep my normal phone number while using the eSIM.
When you switch to a physical SIM card, they give you a temporary number, which can make everything a bit complicated – if you’ve ever had to authenticate something with a different SIM card, you get what I mean!
But with Holafly, we could still message friends, family, hotels, and tour companies, as normal, without needing to change anything.
Global/monthly plans
Because I travel quite frequently throughout the year, I also really like that Holafly now offers monthly global plans.
Instead of buying a different SIM every time you travel somewhere new, you can stay connected much more easily – which is ideal if you travel often, work remotely, or move between countries regularly.
Backup data / Always On
Another feature I really liked was the extra peace of mind from Holafly’s “Always On” feature.
Basically, if your plan unexpectedly expires while you’re travelling, you still get backup data in lots of destinations around the world.

This once again helps avoid the complicated situation of not having any data, and also not being able to top up your data!
Hopefully, you never need it, but when you’re travelling, having that safety net is actually really reassuring.
Is Holafly worth it?
Overall, yes, I thought Holafly was 100% worth it, and I’m really glad that we decided to use them for our Morocco trip.
More than anything, it gave us peace of mind knowing that we’d have reliable data everywhere we went. It was so much easier than trying to find local SIM cards or relying on public WiFi, especially in a destination like Marrakesh, where everything is bustling and just a little bit hectic!
For me, the unlimited data was the biggest selling point.

We were using Google Maps constantly while navigating Marrakesh, checking restaurant recommendations on the go, booking activities online, uploading content, and messaging hotels and tour companies throughout the trip.
Having the freedom to just use our phones normally without worrying about running out of data made travelling feel so much easier and less stressful.
As for the connection itself, we had a really positive experience overall. The setup process was incredibly straightforward, and the eSIM connected almost immediately after we landed in Morocco.
Aside from a few moments while driving through more remote areas where the signal wasn’t perfect, we could use everything exactly as normal throughout the trip, including during day trips outside of Marrakesh and into the Agafay Desert.
I also like that they offer 24/7 customer support if you ever run into issues while travelling. We didn’t have to use this as everything went smoothly, but it’s definitely nice to know it’s there!
Of course, local SIM cards can sometimes work out slightly more affordable depending on the destination, but personally, I think the convenience, flexibility, and peace of mind of using an eSIM far outweigh the small difference in cost – especially if you travel regularly.
And as someone who travels frequently throughout the year, I’m really interested in trying their monthly global plans for future trips as well.
So yes, overall, I hope you found this Holafly review helpful, and I’d definitely use them again for future trips!
