So, without further ado, here are the absolute best things to do in Chiang Rai.

1. Marvel at Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple)

Ah, the White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun. This stunning temple is one of the most unique and beautiful sights in all of Thailand, let alone Chiang Rai.

Your first stop in Chiang Rai should be this temple. The temple is one of the most impressive, beautiful, temples in the country, and one of the best places to visit in Chiang Rai. Plus, it’s one of the most modern temples as it was only built in 1977

Unlike traditional temples, the White Temple was designed by a contemporary artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. It features a striking white exterior with intricate silver and glass details.

But the White Temple isn’t just a pretty face – it also has a deeper spiritual meaning. The white colour represents Buddha’s purity, while the glass details symbolize the Buddha’s wisdom. The murals inside the temple serve as a reminder of the cycle of life and death, encouraging visitors to reflect on their own mortality and spiritual journey.

Just make sure to plan your visit carefully, as the temple can get quite crowded with tourists. You can also book a private tour or a guided tour to learn a little more about the temples. Trust me, it’s worth it to see this modern masterpiece and experience the unique blend of contemporary art and traditional spirituality.

2. See Wat Rong Suea Ten (The Blue Temple)

Next, visit the Blue Temple, or as I like to call it, the temple that will make you feel blue if you miss it!

The temple may be relatively new, but it’s quickly become a favourite among locals and tourists alike. And it’s not hard to see why. There’s just something special about this place that will leave you feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Be sure to walk around the entire temple, too, so you don’t miss the large white Buddha statue at the back!

3. Explore Baan Dam Museum

Now, if you’re looking for something truly offbeat and unusual to add to your Chiang Rai itinerary, then you absolutely cannot miss the Baan Dam Museum. Partly a museum, partly an art gallery, partly a home, this bizarre and fascinating museum is the brainchild of the late Thai artist, Thawan Duchanee. It’s sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits.

The Baan Dam Museum, also known as the Black House Museum, features a collection of over 40 black houses that are arranged in a sprawling and surreal landscape. Each house is filled with an eclectic mix of sculptures, artwork, and other oddities, ranging from animal bones to antique furniture to eerie taxidermy displays. You’ll find snakeskins covered in money, bizarre furniture, animal skulls, funky white igloos, Buddha statues, and maybe even live performers when you enter the main building.

Thai Street Food

The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a lively and bustling market that comes to life as the sun goes down. You’ll find rows upon rows of stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and jewellery to souvenirs and clothing. And if you’re a foodie, then you’re in for a real treat. The market is filled with delicious street food stalls that offer up some of the best eats in town.

But the Night Bazaar isn’t just about shopping and eating – it’s also a great place to soak up some local culture and people-watch. You’ll see locals and tourists alike mingling and bargaining. You might even catch a glimpse of some traditional Thai dancing or live music performances.

5. Explore Singha Park

This sprawling 1,200-acre park is like something out of a fairy tale. It’s filled with rolling hills, vibrant flowers, and a lush tea plantation. If you’re feeling up for it, you can even take on the Singha Park Zipline for a thrilling adventure or catch a ride on a hot air balloon to see the park from above.

6. See Wat Huay Pla Kung (The Big Buddha)

Located just outside of Chiang Rai, this temple is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience. The temple complex is filled with intricate and ornate decorations. But, the highlight is definitely the towering statue of the Bodhisattva Guan Yin – this 80-meter-tall masterpiece is impossible to miss

But the statue is just the beginning. The temple also features a seven-story pagoda and a massive dragon statue, all surrounded by stunning views of the surrounding countryside. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even climb to the top of the pagoda for panoramic views of the area.

7. Explore the Golden Triangle

This area is where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Chiang Rai.

While the Golden Triangle has a storied history as a hub for opium production and trade, these days it’s a peaceful and scenic spot to take in the natural beauty of the Mekong River and the surrounding hills.

The Golden Triangle

One of the best ways to explore the Golden Triangle is by boat. You can hop on a long-tail boat and cruise down the river, taking in the stunning views and learning about the history and culture of the area. Most of the bookable tours to the Golden Triangle will also include this option.

But the Golden Triangle isn’t just about history – there’s also plenty of natural beauty to enjoy. You can take a hike through the hills, go birdwatching, or even just relax with a picnic and take in the peaceful surroundings.

8. Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Unlike some other elephant attractions in Thailand, Chang Rai Elephant Sanctuaries are committed to providing a safe and humane environment for the elephants in their care. The sanctuary works to rescue and rehabilitate elephants that have been mistreated or neglected. They prioritize the well-being and happiness of the animals above all else.
