Trying to decide where to stay in Istanbul can be a bit of a daunting task. The city is one of the largest cities in the world, full of fascinating history, mouth-watering food, and vibrant culture.
It’s also super busy, a little hectic, and occasionally a teeny bit confusing (especially if my first time trying to work out the metro stations is anything to go by!). So, before you start dreaming of all the Turkish delights you’re going to indulge in, you should probably decide on the best place to stay in Istanbul.
Choosing the right neighbourhood and accommodation can make or break your trip, and we all know that feeling of regret when we end up in a less-than-ideal location. If it’s your first time in Istanbul, you’ll want to find the right balance of being near the main attractions, yet also having a taste of local life.
It’s all about finding that sweet spot that allows you to explore the city’s hidden gems while still being close enough to the iconic landmarks.

So, without further ado, I’ll be sharing the inside scoop on the best Istanbul neighbourhoods, so you can avoid any potential pitfalls and make the most of your time in this amazing city.
From budget considerations to transportation options, I’ll cover all the important factors to help you choose the perfect place to call home during your stay.
1. Sultanahmet – where to stay in Istanbul for first-time visitors
Sultanahmet district is the heart of Istanbul. It is home to some of the most important historical landmarks in Turkey including the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia.
Pretty much wherever you stay here will put you within walking distance of the city’s most popular attractions. This makes it the perfect place for first-time travellers who aren’t sure where to stay in Istanbul.
The old city itself is filled with picturesque, narrow cobbled streets lined with shops selling trinkets, souvenirs and freshly made Turkish Delights! Plus, because it’s so central, you can easily catch the metro to anywhere else in the city.
For the foodies out there, there are also many great places to eat in Sultanahmet. You can find traditional Turkish food or more international delicacies if you’d prefer (we had an Indian meal here and it was delicious!).
Obahan Hotel
For a unique and boutique experience in Istanbul, the Obahan Hotel in Sultanahmet is a great choice. It’s located in the centre of Istanbul, less than 1km from the Blue Mosque and just a 10-minute walk from Hagia Sophia.
The hotel is fairly small, which makes for a more personal experience and the rooms are cosy and well designed. Each room has air–conditioning (which trust me, if you go during summer you will certainly need it!), a desk, a kettle, a minibar, a safety deposit, and a flat-screen TV. Plus, there’s a shared lounge and free WiFi throughout.
The breakfast is also delicious. Served buffet-style, you’ll find a great selection including eggs, fruits, cereals, pastries and cakes, hummus, dips, olives, salads, breads, and more. The coffee here is also delicious!
2. Sirkeci – best for families
Sirkeci is easily the best place to stay in Istanbul for families due to its combination of convenience, safety and family-friendly attractions.
Located in the heart of the historical district, it’s super easy to get to Istanbul’s most famous landmarks. The Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque are all within walking distance wherever you stay in Sirkeci.
Plus, if you want to explore other areas of Istanbul, you can easily take public transport to get there, including tram lines and ferry docks.
There are quite a few family-friendly accommodations here, with many of the best hotels providing spacious rooms, family suites and amenities like an indoor swimming pool and play areas to keep the little ones and yourselves entertained.
It’s a pretty safe area too, with well-lit streets and many other tourists out and about to help you and your family feel safe whilst you’re out.
The Glamour Hotel
If you’re wondering where to stay in Istanbul for families, I recommend The Glamour Hotel. This hotel has large rooms and connecting rooms, ideal for families or two couples travelling together. They’ll also provide you with a crib if you need it.
The rooms were nicely designed with bright blue accents, wooden flooring, and plush headboards. You can also opt for a deluxe room which is much larger, has a seating area too and a sea view.
There is a shuttle service which is really useful if you need to get to and from the airport, a restaurant which serves breakfast in the mornings, a 24-hour front desk so it won’t matter when you arrive, and free WIFI.
Rooms also have minibars so you can keep those drinks nice and cool when you return to your room.
3. Karakoy – the trendiest area of Istanbul
If you enjoy a vibrant atmosphere when you travel, you should definitely consider Karakoy as one of the best areas to stay in Istanbul. Once a bustling port district, Karakoy has undergone a remarkable transformation.
You’ll now find an intriguing blend of its rich maritime history and a contemporary urban vibe.
The area is fantastic for creative minds as it is home to many art galleries, lots of street art, and a collection of fancy boutique shops lining the streets. You’ll find historic buildings, trendy cafes, and chic boutiques.
Nightlife here is very good, so if you plan on staying out late with a cocktail or glass of wine, this might just be the perfect place for you. You’ll find trendy rooftop bars with stunning views of the Bosphorus and intimate jazz clubs and music venues.
It’s also known for being great for place foodies as it has a variety of really lovely restaurants serving a mix of traditional Turkish food and other more modern fusion-type dishes.
With its proximity to some of the city’s top attractions such as the Galata Tower and the historic Old City, Karakoy is the ideal blend of authenticity and accessibility.
Hotel Haze Karakoy
This 4* hotel is a wonderful place to stay in Karakoy. It’s a pretty impressive place with a modern design, beautiful rooms, and a contemporary lobby.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll be greeted with plush velvet armchairs, a geometric design of the furniture, indoor plants, and a bright red pop of colour for the reception desk. The rooms themselves are also pretty stylish.
You’ll find a dark oak design on the floor which contrasts the white bedding perfectly. A squashy armchair in the corner, a coffee station, and a flat-screen TV complete the bedroom, but there’s also a very modern shower room.
The Penthouse Suite also has a balcony overlooking the Bosphorus.
4. Taksim – Best for shopping
Taksim is one of the most popular places to stay in Istanbul to experience local cultures, delicious local food, and the best shopping. Located on the European side of the city, on the northern side of the Golden Horn, you’ll spend most of your time in or around Taksim Square.
Considered the heart of modern Istanbul, this popular area is famed for its authentic Turkish shops, restaurants, hotels, and historic landmarks. The most iconic attraction in the square is the Republic Monument, built by Pietro Canonica in 1928.
Other points of interest near the square include Taksim Mosque, the Atatürk Cultural Centre, and Gezi Park. Once you’ve visited the square, walk along Istiklal Street.
Along this busy street, you’ll find a huge range of shops, stunning Ottoman-era architecture, the oldest secondary school in Turkey, theatres, art galleries, and plenty of places to grab something to eat.
Bonne Sante Hotel
Bonne Sante Hotel is a fantastic accommodation option situated just 150 metres away from Taksim Square. Sitting on Istiklal Street, it offers easy access to Taksim’s best shops, restaurants, and attractions, too!
Inside, Bonne Sante Hotel offers luxurious rooms and suites at affordable prices. Every room has a luxury interior featuring a spacious private bathroom, double bed, TV, and minibar.
Some rooms also have terraces, balconies, and jacuzzis. Better yet, essential toiletries, slippers, and bathrobes are included.
To top things off, Bonne Sante has an on-site restaurant serving authentic Turkish cuisine.
5. Galata – best for cafes and cool vibes
Featuring some of the best landmarks in Istanbul, Galata is one of the best places to stay on the other side of the Bosporus.
There’s a lot to see here. You’ll be within walking distance of the famous Galata Tower, one of the most well-known sights on Istanbul’s skyline. Istiklal Avenue and the iconic Galata Bridge with all its fishermen, are also within walking distance.
You’ll also be able to easily access many of the major tourist attractions in the north of the city. I particularly love Rumeli Fortress and the Dolmabahçe Palace which are both just a short train ride away and well worth seeing if you have a few days in Istanbul.
This eclectic neighbourhood boasts narrow cobblestone streets and colourful buildings adorned with ornate balconies and street art. Many hotels here offer panoramic views of the Bosphorus and Istanbul’s iconic skyline.
Perla Galata Hotel
I wasn’t too sure what to make of this hotel when we pulled up, but it actually turned out to be one of our favourite hotels in the city. Tucked down a little alleyway and a little off the beaten track Perla Galata Hotel is a charming boutique hotel in Istanbul.
To get to the reception, you have to go down a short staircase and into a small lobby where you’ll find a sofa, water fountain, and a fish in a tank. Then, head into the elevator to reach your rooms.
The rooms we pleasantly decorated with neutral colours, large beds, and comfy chairs. You’ll have a plush backboard, a tea and coffee-making station, and a modern bathroom. My favourite part though, was easily the breakfast.
Breakfast was served on the rooftop, in a little room overlooking the Bosphorus It was also just a short walk to the Bosphorus for our river cruise. The views were wonderful and it was a lovely way to start the day, eating breakfast from the roof.
The lady who served us was also lovely. There was a standard Turkish breakfast buffet spread of salads, bread, jams, eggs, olives, and cheeses, but she also made us fresh omelettes and came around with a tray of homemade cakes which was a lovely touch.
Overall, the hotel was great value, had super friendly staff, and wasn’t too far from the city centre.
6. Besiktas – best for exploring the Bosporus
If you visit Istanbul and want to take in the most scenic views of the Bosporus, you should stay in Besiktas. Besiktas sits right at the water’s edge, surrounded by a maze of winding streets.
For those who don’t know, the Bosporus or Bosporus Strait is a natural strait connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It’s one of the most important international waterways in the world.
From Besiktas, you can admire the views of the strait, take a boat tour, and cross the Bosporus via the 15 July Martyrs Bridge. Aside from the Bosporus, Besiktas is also known for its rich history, architecture, and authentic food.
Popular attractions include the lively fish market, Grand Mecidiye Mosque, Abbasağa Park, and the 19th-century Dolmabahçe Palace. The Maritime Museum is a great place to learn more about Istanbul’s maritime history!
The Stay Bosphorus
If you want to live like a royal and enjoy unparalleled views of the Bosphorus, book The Stay Bosphorus. This breathtaking hotel sits on the water’s edge, right next to Grand Mecidiye Mosque.
Combining late 19th-century architecture with a contemporary design, the rooms here, as a minimum, feature windows with a sea view. However, some of the luxury rooms and suites also feature a private terrace or balcony.
Every room has a large bed, a private bathroom, and a TV. You can also enjoy an on-site fitness centre, spa, and buffet breakfast.
7. Cihangir – best for longer stays
Cihangir is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Istanbul, making it a big hit with tourists. Thanks to its great location, a vast range of things to do, charming character, and strong European culture, it’s the best place in the city for longer stays and first-time visits.
When you’re not kicking back with an old-school Turkish-style tea at the iconic Firuzağa Kahvesi, you’ll likely find yourself getting lost down the narrow streets or tucking into ice cream at the famous Yasar Ustanin Dondurmasi.
As simple as it sounds, wandering the neighbourhood’s narrow streets and admiring the old architecture is super enjoyable. You don’t want to miss Cihangir Mosque, The Museum of Innocence, and Ağa Hamamı (Turkish baths).
You can also walk to Çukurcuma (Cihangir’s neighbouring neighbourhood), where you’ll find antique shops, art galleries, and a historical Turkish bath called Cukurcuma Hamamı.
Cihangir VAV Suites
Cihangir VAV Suites offers spacious apartments in the heart of Cihangir for two or more people. Less than 400 metres from the Museum of Innocence and approximately 700 metres from Taksim Square, you’ll never be too far away from the action.

Personally, we love how the terrace overlooks the Bosphorus. The views are incredible!

Beyoglu is located on the European side of Istanbul, sandwiched between the Golden Horn to the north and the Bosphorus Strait to the south. Although this area is packed with historical sights and authentic Turkish shops, it’s best known for its vibrant nightlife.
During the day, explore the streets in search of iconic attractions such as the Galata Tower and Çiçek Pasajı and visit authentic Turkish shops. In the evening, head to Istiklal Avenue to enjoy the city’s best bars, clubs, and restaurants.
Serious partygoers should hit up Escape Club İstanbul and Ritim. Meanwhile, the Tower Pub is well worth a visit if you seek a more relaxed night.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for the best food, Mikla is the go-to destination. This rooftop restaurant is regarded as one of the best in the world, and it offers incredible city views.
Ramada By Wyndham Istanbul Pera Taksim
This beautiful 5-star hotel offers modern guest rooms equipped with air conditioning, walk-in showers, double beds, and TVs. Some rooms also feature jacuzzi-style bathtubs.
Other Ramada By Wyndham Istanbul Pera Taksim facilities include a Mediterranean restaurant, sun terrace, outdoor swimming pool, and spa and wellness centre.
In terms of location, this hotel sits in the heart of Beyoglu. Galata Tower is less than 600 yards away, and countless bars, cafes, and restaurants are nearby.

9. Sisli – best for an upper-class stay
Last but certainly not least is Sisli, an affluent area known for its upscale hotels, shopping centres, and fashion boutiques. If you’re looking for a more luxurious Istanbul getaway, this is the perfect destination for you.
Most of the action in Sisli can be found around Halaskargazi Street. This lively area has many shops, restaurants, and museums. It’s also home to Ataturk’s museum, located in the former home of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Sisli also has some of the best architecture in Istanbul. Tesvikiye Mosque, which opened in 1854, and Sisli Mosque, which opened in 1949, are two fine examples.
If you’d prefer to shop, Cevahir Mall and Kanyon Shopping Center are two places you should visit. Kanyon Shopping Center comprises 30 floors and 160+ international shops, cafes, cinema halls, and luxury restaurants.
Meanwhile, Cevahir Mall has a whopping 290+ shops, three cinemas, and a food hall.
Gleam Collection Hotel

Istanbul as a whole can be a very affordable city and you can often find great accommodation for affordable prices. While Sultanahmet and Beyoglu are popular areas with a range of options, exploring neighbourhoods slightly further from the city centre may offer more budget-friendly choices.

Overall, I love Istanbul. It’s a city I’ll keep coming back to because there’s just so much to see and do there. But knowing where to base yourself is essential for having a comfortable stay.
Staying in one part of the city compared to another will give you a totally different experience. If you’re after vibrant nightlife, close proximity to attractions, or somewhere peaceful where you can unwind in the evening, you’ll want to stay in a different place.
You can also get a completely different experience visiting in summer to visiting Istanbul in winter.
