Now, without further ado, here are the 8 best things to do in Cinque Terre.
1. Visit Monterosso Beach
Easily one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre is to head down to Monterosso al Mare. This gorgeous village offers a beautiful stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun in a picturesque setting.
Monterosso Beach is divided into two parts, known as Fegina and Old Town. Fegina Beach, located in the newer part of town, is the larger and more popular section. It is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and various beachside amenities, making it a comfortable and convenient spot for sunbathing and swimming.
Aside from sunbathing and water activities, Monterosso Beach offers stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and colourful village houses. It is a perfect spot to capture memorable photographs and witness the captivating beauty of Cinque Terre’s coastal landscape.
Tip: During the peak tourist season, Monterosso Beach can become quite crowded. However, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon may offer a quieter experience.
2. See the viewpoints
Part of the charm of Cinque Terre is discovering hidden gems and viewpoints and it was one of my favourite things to do here. Here are some of the most beautiful viewpoints in Cinque Terre:
- Vernazza From Corniglia. The hiking trails in Cinque Terre provide numerous stunning viewpoints. My favourite viewpoint in Cinque Terre is along the hiking trail in Vernazza. This is also one of those postcard views that keeps cropping up again and again.
- Riomaggiore Harbour. Riomaggiore Harbour is a charming spot that offers captivating views of the village and the sea. The colourful houses that cascade down the cliffside create a stunning backdrop against the tranquil waters of the harbour. This is a view worthy of a postcard.
- Manarola Harbour. This is probably another one that you’ve seen in a photograph or on Instagram. The small, scenic harbour is nestled between colourful buildings and rocky cliffs. It provides a delightful fusion of coastal beauty and village charm.
- Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero. Perched on a hill, this sanctuary provides a serene and contemplative atmosphere, ideal for reflection and enjoying the sweeping vistas. It’s one of the highest points in Cinque Terre and, from its elevated position, you can admire the rugged cliffs, terraced vineyards, colourful rooftops, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea merging with the horizon. It’s utterly beautiful.
- Fegina Beach. Fegina Beach in Monterosso, the largest of the Cinque Terre villages, offers a remarkable view of the coastline. From the beach, you can take in the sweeping panorama of the rugged cliffs, the picturesque village, and the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a place to relax on the golden sand while soaking up the breathtaking surroundings.
3. Hike between the villages
One of my favourite things to do in Cinque Terre was to hike between the villages. The famous Blue Trail is an absolute must while you’re in the area and not only features stunning viewpoints (many of the ones listed above) but also provides a scenic dip into the past and how things used to be in the villages.
It connects all five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. The trail offers a mix of coastal paths, staircases, and narrow paths, taking you through vineyards, olive groves, and picturesque seaside cliffs. Each segment of the Blue Trail offers its own unique charm and stunning views of the villages and the sea.
Who should hike the blue trail?
While some sections are relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels, others can be more challenging, involving steep ascents and descents. It’s important to check the current trail conditions, as maintenance and occasional closures may occur due to safety reasons or weather conditions. Proper footwear, comfortable clothing, and sufficient water are essential for a pleasant hiking experience.
The duration of the hike between the villages depends on the specific trails you choose and your pace. The Blue Trail, when walked in its entirety, takes around 5-6 hours. However, you have the flexibility to hike smaller sections that suit your preferences and time constraints. It’s advisable to start early in the day to avoid the midday heat and crowds, as the trails can get busy, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Tip: To hike the trails between the villages in Cinque Terre, you need to obtain a Cinque Terre Card, specifically the Cinque Terre Trekking Card. The card can be purchased at information centres in the villages and allows unlimited hiking for the duration of its validity.
4. Explore all 5 villages
Exploring all five villages of Cinque Terre allows you to experience the distinct character and beauty of each coastal gem. Here’s what you can expect when exploring Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso in Cinque Terre:
- Riomaggiore: Often considered the gateway to Cinque Terre, its charming atmosphere sets the tone for the entire region. As you wander through the narrow streets and staircases, you’ll encounter colourful houses, local shops, and traditional trattorias.
- Manarola: Known for its postcard-perfect scenes, Manarola is famous for its colourful buildings that cling to the cliffs. One of the highlights is hiking the Via dell’Amore, a scenic path that leads to Riomaggiore, offering captivating vistas of the coastline.
- Corniglia: Perched on a promontory, Corniglia offers a unique perspective of Cinque Terre. To reach the village, you’ll ascend a staircase, but the effort is rewarded with panoramic views. Explore the charming streets, visit the beautiful Church of St. Peter, and enjoy the terraced landscapes from Corniglia’s terraces.
- Vernazza: Considered one of the most picturesque villages, Vernazza boasts a stunning natural harbour and a vibrant waterfront piazza. Explore the narrow lanes lined with pastel-coloured buildings, visit the Doria Castle for panoramic views, and savour local seafood specialities in the village’s waterfront restaurants. Vernazza’s beauty is truly captivating.
- Monterosso al Mare: The largest and most resort-like of the five villages, Monterosso offers a delightful blend of sandy beaches, lively promenades, and historical sites. Take a leisurely stroll along the seaside, relax on Fegina Beach, visit the medieval Old Town, and sample the local culinary delights. Monterosso provides a wonderful balance of relaxation and exploration.
The best way to explore the villages
To explore all five villages efficiently, you can either hike along the trails that connect them or use the convenient train service that runs through the towns. Hiking allows you to immerse yourself in the stunning coastal landscapes, while the train provides a quick and easy way to hop between villages.
Each village offers its own unique charm and attractions, from stunning viewpoints to delightful coastal ambience. By exploring all five villages, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the diverse landscapes, architectural beauty, and warm Italian hospitality that make Cinque Terre such a cherished destination.
5. Explore Cinque Terre by Boat
Of course, as with any gorgeous Italian coastal village, one of the best ways to explore it is from the water. Cruising along the Ligurian Sea unveils breathtaking views of colourful cliffside towns, rugged cliffs, and terraced vineyards.
The gentle sway of the boat combined with the sea breeze creates a sense of tranquillity as you navigate the pristine waters. You can anchor near hidden coves and secluded beaches, immersing yourself in the clear turquoise waters and enjoying moments of serenity.
Whether you choose a guided boat tour or rent a private vessel, exploring Cinque Terre by boat offers a memorable and enchanting journey that showcases the region’s natural beauty in all its glory.
6. Eat Gelato
Gelato in Italy is a must, right? I mean, there really is no argument here! And Cinque Terre is the perfect place to get some.
As you stroll through the charming streets of the coastal villages, you’ll find numerous gelaterias offering a tempting array of flavours. The gelato here is renowned for its creamy texture and intense, authentic taste. From traditional favourites like stracciatella and pistachio to inventive combinations using local ingredients, there’s something to satisfy every palate.
Whether you opt for a classic cone or a cup, taking a moment to savour a scoop of gelato while enjoying the picturesque views of the sea and colourful village houses is a quintessential Cinque Terre experience. It’s a refreshing and indulgent treat that adds a delightful touch to your exploration of this enchanting coastal paradise.
7. Eat Locally Caught Seafood
And talking of delicious treats, the seafood in Cinque Terre is spectacular. Being a coastal region, Cinque Terre boasts an abundance of local catches from the Ligurian Sea. From quaint seaside trattorias to charming seafood-focused restaurants, you’ll find a variety of dining options that showcase the best of the region’s marine bounty.
Feast on platters of briny, succulent anchovies, a local speciality, served in various preparations like marinated, fried, or stuffed. Sample the catch of the day, which may include flavorful fish such as red mullet, sea bass, or bream, expertly cooked and seasoned to perfection. I had a sea bass here, and it was utterly delicious.
Pair your seafood dishes with Ligurian wines, such as the crisp and refreshing Vermentino, for a complete culinary experience.
8. Take a Day Trip to Pisa
Taking a day trip to Pisa from Cinque Terre offers a wonderful opportunity to explore another iconic destination in Italy. Pisa, known worldwide for its iconic Leaning Tower, is easily accessible from Cinque Terre.
You can conveniently reach Pisa by train, with a journey time of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the specific route and connections. We actually did this the other way around, travelling from Pisa to Cinque Terre. But if you’re staying by the coast, it’s well worth visiting the historic city.
Once in Pisa, immerse yourself in the historical charm of the Piazza dei Miracoli, where the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery stand in all their architectural glory.
Take the time to climb the Leaning Tower and marvel at the unique perspective it offers. Stroll along the Arno River, explore the lively streets, and savour delicious Tuscan cuisine. With its rich history and architectural wonders, a day trip to Pisa from Cinque Terre promises a memorable experience that combines cultural exploration and iconic landmarks.
