If you’ve ever dreamt of indulging in mouthwatering gelato, marvelling at ancient ruins, or getting lost amidst breathtaking landscapes, then Italy should be at the top of your travel bucket list. Trust me, this country has it all! Vibrant cities bursting with history and culture, charming coastal towns, and picturesque countryside. Not to mention stunning mountain ranges.

Are you ready to fall head over heels in love with Italy? Well, here are the top 10 places you need to add to your bucket list today.

1. Rome

Ah, Rome! The eternal city that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. I utterly adored visiting Rome. We spent 3 days in Rome and I fully believe I could’ve crammed another 3 days in easily and not run out of things to do.

Where else can you stroll down the same streets where gladiators once roamed, or gaze in awe at the iconic Colosseum, standing tall for nearly two millennia? But Rome isn’t just about crumbling ruins.

Visit the smallest country in the world – the Vatican City. Be prepared to have your breath taken away by the beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s iconic frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican Museums will take half a day to explore on their own!

Then, take a seat in Piazza Navona and toss a coin into the legendary Trevi Fountain. When the sun sets, head to the Trastevere neighbourhood, where narrow streets lead you to cosy trattorias and buzzing nightlife.

Rome is a city that effortlessly blends ancient grandeur with a modern zest for life. It’s easily one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy.

2. Verona

Verona was the first place I ever visited in Italy, and boy did it pack a punch! It’s surprisingly underrated compared to Italy’s other destinations, but the birthplace of Romeo and Juliet exudes an undeniable old-world charm.

Picture yourself wandering through narrow, winding streets, lined with colourful buildings and adorned with beautiful balconies. Piazza delle Erbe, the bustling heart of Verona, is a sensory delight, with vibrant market stalls, historical landmarks, and lively cafes. But the crown jewel of Verona is undoubtedly the Arena di Verona.

This stunning Roman amphitheatre, dating back to the 1st century AD, is a testament to the city’s rich history. Some of the other top attractions in Verona include Castelvecchio, a medieval castle with a breathtaking bridge spanning the Adige River.

And, of course, Juliet’s House, the iconic setting of Shakespeare’s tale. While the balcony might be a work of fiction, it doesn’t stop countless romantics from leaving messages of love on its walls and seeking their own love story in the city.

3. Florence

The birthplace of the Renaissance is undeniably one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy. A true haven for art aficionados, culture enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for beauty, Florence is definitely worth the hype.

Florence, Italy

As you wander through its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you’ll find yourself surrounded by architectural marvels.

The magnificent Florence Cathedral, or Il Duomo, dominates the skyline of the city. Climbing to the top rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the city, but the real marvel lies inside, with the intricate frescoes that adorn the ceiling.

Plus, for those that aren’t huge fans of art, Florence’s charm extends beyond its artistic treasures. The city’s vibrant atmosphere is palpable as you stroll along the Arno River. Cross the iconic Ponte Vecchio, a bridge lined with glittering jewellery shops. Lose yourself in the Oltrarno neighbourhood, where traditional artisans still practice their crafts. And discover hidden gems tucked away in quiet piazzas and charming cafes.

4. Pisa

If you’ve ever wanted to take the classic (albeit a little cheesy) photograph of Italy’s most famous leaning tower, then I highly recommend a trip to Pisa.

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

As you approach the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), you’ll be greeted by the sight of this magnificent campanile, leaning at a seemingly impossible angle. It’s a sight that never fails to amaze and capture the imagination of visitors from around the globe. Don’t miss the opportunity to climb to the top for panoramic views and a unique perspective of Pisa.

But, this picturesque city in Tuscany offers much more than just a gravity-defying architectural wonder. Pisa has a rich history and cultural heritage to explore. The city was once a maritime power during the Middle Ages, and remnants of its glorious past can be seen in its historic centre.

Take a leisurely walk along the Arno River and admire the beautiful palaces and bridges that dot the riverbanks. Meander through the charming streets of the city and stumble upon medieval squares and hidden gems that showcase Pisa’s architectural splendours.

5. Milan

For one of (if not THE) most impressive Duomo in the country, Milan is easily one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy. The fashion capital, the economic powerhouse, and a city that effortlessly combines history, innovation, and style.

Duomo in Milan

The magnificent Duomo di Milano took centuries to complete and stands as one of the largest cathedrals in the world. Marvel at its intricate façade, adorned with countless statues and intricate details, and venture inside to witness its grandeur firsthand. Climb to the rooftop and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city that will leave you breathless.

Milan is also home to world-class art and culture. Prepare to be captivated by Da Vinci’s enigmatic masterpiece, “The Last Supper,” housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Of course, I can’t talk about Milan without mentioning its unrivalled status in the fashion world. I highly recommend a visit to the glamorous Quadrilatero della Moda to the trendy Navigli district, Milan offers a shopping experience like no other. Even if you’re not a shopaholic, the atmosphere is palpable and adds an extra layer of sophistication to the city’s allure.

6. Venice

To be completely honest, I almost didn’t add Venice to this list. I know, I know, it’s easily one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy. But with the over-tourism and the city slowly sinking, plus, when I visited, it was so busy, you could hardly turn around, it didn’t make for an amazing experience. Nonetheless, if I were to imagine a perfect Venice with peaceful canals and beautiful streets, it would easily make this list. Soooo…here we are!

how to spend 3 days in Venice

Venice is undeniably a city unlike any other. The absence of cars and bustling streets is replaced by a network of winding canals and charming bridges. One of the must-see sights in Venice is the magnificent St. Mark’s Square, the heart of the city. Here, you’ll find the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture that dazzles with its golden mosaics and intricate details. Climb the Campanile, the bell tower, for a panoramic view of the city.

Discover the charm of quieter neighbourhoods like Dorsoduro and Cannaregio, where you can escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the authentic Venetian way of life. And taking a day trip to the colourful village of Burano is well worth it.

7. Italian Lakes

The Italian lakes are beautiful. There’s no other way of describing them. I loved my time in Lake Garda, and it’s easily one of the prettiest places I’ve travelled to in Italy. I’ve not been to Lake Como yet, but it’s pretty high on my bucket list!

Sirmione is one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy

Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, is a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking tranquillity. As you approach its crystal-clear waters, you’ll be greeted by a panorama of picturesque villages, lush vineyards, and majestic mountains that create a postcard-perfect setting.

One of the best ways to experience the magic of Lake Garda is by exploring its enchanting towns. Sirmione, located on a narrow peninsula, boasts a medieval castle, ancient Roman ruins, and thermal baths that invite you to relax and unwind. Stroll along its charming streets, indulge in gelato, and take in the beauty of the lake from the peaceful shores.

8. Bologna

Bologna was a city that really surprised me. I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it half as much as I did. But it’s certainly one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy.

Bologna is one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy

For one, it’s the foodie capital. You might think you’ve tried Italian cuisine, but trust me, you haven’t unless you’ve been here. This city is where spaghetti bolognese was born! Pair that with its other delicacies, such as tortellini and mortadella and you’ve literally got a true paradise for food lovers.

Bologna porticos

But aside from the cuisine, Bologna is also a historical and cultural gem. As you wander through its winding streets, you’ll be greeted by a stunning array of terracotta-coloured buildings, elegant porticoes that stretch for miles, and charming piazzas bustling with life. The city’s architectural gems, such as the iconic Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda (more leaning towers in Italy), and the magnificent Basilica of San Petronio, pay homage to its medieval past and offer captivating sights at every turn.

Don’t forget to explore the porticos. These covered walkways stretch for over 40 kilometres, creating a unique architectural marvel that sets Bologna apart. Dating back to medieval times, the porticos serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing shelter from the elements and adding a distinctive charm to the city’s streets. Be sure to walk the portico up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca for stunning views over the city.

9. Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre was another of the top 10 places to visit in Italy that well exceeded my expectations. This collection of five colourful coastal villages perched along the rugged Ligurian coastline is a slice of paradise that will steal your heart.

Cinque Terre Italy, bucket list experiences

Each of the five villages—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—has its own distinct charm and personality. As you explore them, you’ll be greeted by narrow winding streets, pastel-coloured houses clinging to the cliffs, and stunning views at every turn.

Hiking trails (one of my favourite hikes in Italy) connect the villages, offering breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and the terraced vineyards that have been carefully cultivated for centuries. In fact, one of the best ways to experience Cinque Terre is by embarking on the famous Sentiero Azzurro, the Blue Trail, which winds along the rugged coastline, connecting all five villages. You’ll find some of the best viewpoints along the way.

10. The Dolomites

This destination should be well up there on your Italy bucket list. With its rugged peaks, dramatic rock formations, and pristine alpine landscapes, the Dolomites offer a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking awe-inspiring beauty.

The Dolomites provide a playground for adventure seekers, with endless opportunities for hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and skiing. Lace up your boots and embark on breathtaking trails that wind through lush valleys, past crystal-clear lakes, and up to panoramic viewpoints that offer vistas of unparalleled beauty.

But the Dolomites are not just about adrenaline-pumping activities. They also offer tranquillity and serenity for those seeking a slower pace. Picture yourself strolling through charming mountain villages, such as Cortina d’Ampezzo or Ortisei, where traditional wooden chalets and flower-filled balconies create a picture-perfect setting. It’s gorgeous, and undeniably one of the top 10 places to visit in Italy.
