16 Tropical Places to Visit in December

Sharing is caring!

What typically springs to mind when you think of December? Christmas lights? Santa Claus? Christmas markets in Europe sprinkled with snow and a mug full of hot mulled wine? Well, perhaps this year, it’s time to change the scenery a little! If you’re thinking about tropical places to visit in December, you’ve come to the right place.

Beautiful views over Phuket in Thailand,

Sometimes, you just need a bit of sunshine, right? I definitely get it. Much as I love festive spirit, after a while, there’s only so much hot chocolate and blankets and fluffy socks you can take. Not to mention the horrific sight of the heating bill on the smart meter in the corner of the living room…

I’m not saying that plane tickets are cheap – heck, some of these destinations can be pretty pricey to fly to! But, if you’d rather be sipping cocktails on a beach than huddled under a duvet, these tropical getaways might just be the inspiration you need for December!

The Best Tropical Places to Visit in December

From the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean to the shiny temples of Thailand, these are the 16 best tropical places to visit in December.

1. Bangkok, Thailand

Average Temperature: 30°C (86°F)

Most trips to Thailand will land in Bangkok. And whilst you may think about running off to the Thai Islands, I recommend staying for a while. We spent a total of 5 days in Bangkok during our trip to Thailand and it was absolutely fantastic. I think visiting the capital is a great way to get a taste of the culture before you go and lounge on the beach.

Thailand - stunning temples in Bangkok

There are lots of things to do in Bangkok. The temples are simply stunning and the Grand Palace should be on everyone’s bucket list. Be sure to see the huge reclining Buddha, the beautiful Wat Arun, and many of the smaller temples around the city are also worth popping into.

As well as that you have floating markets, rooftop views, and the original capital of Thailand with its authentic historical sights, just a short drive away. If you do decide to head north, however, I recommend getting a guided tour. We took a taxi and ended up stranded as there were no taxis out there to take us back!

Overall Bangkok is a fantastic tropical destination to visit in December and it’s also very affordable once you’ve footed the price of the flights!

Top Tip: If you aren’t bothered about a Christmas trip, I recommend booking flights for the beginning of December as you can usually get some good deals. Flight prices towards the end of the month soar, but, if you do decide to go for New Year’s Eve, the city puts on a fantastic fireworks display.

2. Cancun, Mexico

Average Temperature: 28°C (82°F)

If you want vibrant beach party vibes with a side of history, culture, and adventure, head to Cancun in December. The winter months are some of Mexico’s most popular, mainly because this is the country’s best weather. So, if you’re looking for a tropical place to visit in December, Cancun is a great option.

Cancun is one of the best tropical places to visit in December

I’ll be completely honest, it’s a little touristy in places – primarily in the beach areas along the Hotel Zone. Here, we found booming music, people dressed up trying to get you to buy things, lots of lairy nightclubs and bars, and very pricey sun loungers. But, I also found that that’s only one side of the popular beachside city.

If you head into the old town, you’ll find things drastically quieten down. This area is a lot more authentic with small restaurants, family-owned coffee shops, and places to buy gifts and trinkets. It’s also worth visiting some of the popular historical sights in the area.

Chichen Itza

You cannot go wrong with Chichen Itza and, as one of the 7 Wonders of the World, you’re probably going to want to add that spot to your trip. On top of that, I also recommend taking a bus down to Tulum where you’ll find some more architectural ruins with a beautiful ocean backdrop. The nearby Coba ruins are also well worth a visit.

3. Krabi, Thailand

Average Temperature: 30°C (86°F)

If big cities aren’t your vibe, Krabi is definitely one of the best tropical places to visit in December. Located on the southern coast of Thailand, east of Phuket, this beautiful province was my personal favourite spot in Thailand.

It was absolutely beautiful.

There were towering green mountains, lush forests, and beautiful beaches. It’s more peaceful than the neighbouring Phuket and also seemed much more authentic. On top of that, there was plenty to do there.

Krabi longtail boats, Thailand

We went on several adventures in Krabi. Our first, and most challenging, was to climb that staggering 1300 stairs to the top of the Tiger King Temple. Despite all the hikes I’ve done in Europe, like Norway and Wales, that is still one of my most challenging climbs to date. But the views from the top were well worth the effort.

We also went kayaking in a mangrove forest which was another fantastic experience. Our guide took us past beautiful cliff faces and waterlogged forests, and we even saw wild baby monkeys in the trees.

If you want a tropical getaway that effortlessly combines culture and natural beauty, I highly recommend Krabi.

4. Costa Rica

Average Temperature: 25°C (77°F)

If you’re dreaming of a tropical Christmas – Costa Rica is the place for you! December is considered one of the best months to visit weather-wise, with little rain, warm days, and lower humidity.

On the coast, you can expect average maximum temperatures of 28°C (82°F). In the mountains, it’s a little cooler, with average maximums of around 22°C (72°F) with cooler mornings and evenings.

The country’s main international airport is SJO Juan Santamaría International Airport in the capital city of San Jose. Renting a car is the easiest way to get around, and there are plenty of rental options available at the airport.

There are so many wonderful places to visit in Costa Rica for a memorable Christmas experience. With miles of palm-lined coastline, some of the most pristine jungles in the world teeming with unique wildlife, and charming mountain towns to choose from.

December is the peak humpback whale watching season in the Pacific Coast town of Uvita. The rainy season has just finished, so the waterfalls of Bajos del Toro and La Fortuna are flowing. The waves are pumping on the Caribbean Coast, and December marks the start of the surf season in Puerto Viejo. The cooler temperatures make great wildlife-watching conditions in Manuel Antonio National Park and Corcovado National Park.

Wherever you decide, just be sure to book early as Christmas is the peak travel season. Accommodation and car rentals can be booked out months in advance.

5. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Average Temperature: 32°C (89°F)

When looking for a unique festive experience, visit Kuala Lumpur for Christmas. In Malaysia’s capital, you’ll find a unique mix of a traditional Christmas atmosphere and cultural diversity.

6. Goa, India

December in Goa is magical. Not everyone realizes that this tiny state in India celebrates Christmas with so much festivity. There is a very big Christian community here and almost every second turn has a church, so Christmas is one of the biggest festivals here.

A large part of Christmas always revolves around the numerous traditions that take place every year. From the early start when it comes to making the traditional Goan Christmas sweets to the decorations that get strung on the houses, the preparation starts a week in advance. You will even find people sweeping the roads and pavements so that their surroundings are clean.

Christmas Eve is a flurry of activity. Everyone is getting ready for midnight mass in the church. Those who miss the night mass will head out in their best attire in the morning. Wishes are exchanged and so are sweets. A star is hung on every Christian house and you will see little cribs set up everywhere.

Everyone is full of cheer and you will find people singing carols and exchanging sweets all through Christmas day.

The north part of the island is the tourist corridor from Negril and Montego Bay at one end, Ocho Rios in the centre and Port Antonio at the other end. You’ll find lovely beaches with a stunning coastline and plenty of water sports too! If you are wondering how many days are good for Jamaica, I would recommend 5-7 days on this tropical island in the Caribbean.

Beaches in Jamaica

After you settle in at the beach resort of your choice, hit the pool or just the pool bar for a drink. Take a walk on the beach to watch the sunset. To explore the scenic coastline of Jamaica, you can either hire a private boat or take a group cruise. Swim, snorkel or go for a dive.
