Looking for the warmest places to travel in Europe in January? January is such an underrated month to visit Europe, but it’s perfect for winter sun!
When you think of January in Europe, it doesn’t exactly scream sunny. I mean, it’s cold, it’s wet, it’s not exactly what you’d consider a lovely holiday… or is it!?
I don’t actually recommend visiting Europe in summer at all. I’d much prefer the quietest and coolest month of the year, especially as that’s when some of the warmest places in Europe in January are at their best.
Europe in January may not seem that exciting, but trust me when I say that it might surprise you. Of course, I’ve visited all sorts of countries in the winter months, from snowy Sweden to a warm-weather Christmas in Malta, so I can honestly recommend it.
So, if you’re craving a bit of sunshine once all the festivities are over, here are some of the warmest places in Europe in January.

1. Malta
Average Temperature: 19°C
So, let’s just straight in with my Maltese Christmas! We visited Malta towards the end of December and stayed until the New Year. It was completely fantastic.
We left the UK when it was all gloomy and raining, and when we got off the plane to blue skies and sunshine, everyone’s faces lit up. Including mine! I mean, I love exploring England, but I’m not a huge fan of the rain.
In comparison, Malta is the perfect winter sun destination. The island has a Mediterranean climate and the whole time we were there, the temperature didn’t drop below 18°C during the day. The evenings were much cooler though, so you will need to pack a jacket.
There’s also so much to do in Malta. There are archaeological sites that date back thousands of years (some historians have said these are older than the ones in Egypt!), beautiful cobbled streets of the old town, pretty parks and gardens, and beautiful sandy beaches.
The local cuisine is also super yummy – kind of like a cross between African and Italian. And I highly recommend taking a trip from Malta to Gozo while you’re there.
If you’re looking for a seriously underrated gem and one of the warmest places in Europe in January, I can’t recommend Malta enough.

2. Cyprus
Average Temperature: 18°C
In my opinion, Cyprus is another one of the most underrated places to visit in Europe. This tiny little island is located near Turkey and Greece. It’s also quite close to the Middle East and its cultural background is fantastic.
In Cyprus, you can see ancient amphitheatres perched on top of hills, tiny medieval castles that look like little boxes, and walk through stunning gorges. Like Malta, the island is small, so it’s easy to navigate.
If you live in the UK, you’ll also be pleased to know that they drive on the left side of the road, so it’s very easy to hire a car and explore.
A few highlights and must-see sights include Paphos historical sights, Ayia Napa cliffs, the Kourion Theatre, Avakus Gorge, Coral Bay, and Limassol. But there’s so much more.
If you’re into adventure, there are plenty of shipwrecks and coral reefs that make great diving opportunities, and if you enjoy the outdoors, there are also plenty of opportunities for hiking and walking both along the coastline, and into the Troodos Mountain range.
Temperatures in January are typically around 18°C and there’s such a wide range of things to do here, that you’re sure to have a fantastic time.
3. Tenerife, Spain
Average Temperature: 20°C
The Canary Islands are one of the hottest destinations in Europe year-round, especially in the winter months. While the rest of the continent (and even the country, Spain) has its snowshoes and thick gloves on, Tenerife is basking in a toasty 20°C!
This fascinating volcanic island is so much more than simply a beach break. I mean, yes it does have some of the most wonderful beaches in Spain, but it also has culture, hiking routes, adventure trails, beautiful cities, and authentic towns.
While you’re there, you can go hiking in Teide National Park, explore the Botanical Gardens, go beach hopping, visit cafes, or even go on boat trips to some of the other Spanish islands.
Tenerife is not an underrated travel destination. In fact, it’s one of the most popular destinations for Brits to travel to. But, I think there’s much more to it than what meets the eye.
Yet, if you wanted a simple lounge by the pool with a cocktail holiday, Tenerife could also give you that, too. And after the stress of Christmas, I honestly don’t blame you!
4. Antalya, Turkey
Average Temperature: 16°C
Turkey is huge. It is also such a diverse country with so much to see from the towering ruins of Ephesus to the creamy caves of Cappadocia.
Located on the southern coast, Antalya is one of the country’s most popular seaside resorts. But, if you ever wanted to see it without the crowds, January is the time to do it.
I loved my time in Antalya. The beaches were beautiful, the locals were incredibly friendly, and the history was out-of-this-world. We spent at least two days while we were in the area just hopping from historical site to historical site drinking it all in and learning so much.
If you are interested in history, some of the best ancient ruins near Antalya include Phaselis ruins, Olympos ruins, the streets of Side, and the ancient city of Perge.
Even the city centre of Antalya itself is a great place for history lovers with the fascinating Hadrian’s Gate and oceanside Hidirlik Tower. You can see many of these places on a guided tour if you’d prefer.
On top of the history, the culture of Turkey is just fantastic – as is the food – and January makes the perfect time to explore all of this. The weather is sunny but not hot, crowds are non-existent, and the prices are much lower.
5. The Algarve, Portugal
Average Temperature: 16°C
I think that one of the best winter destinations is Portugal, hands down. And it just so happens that the south coast is also one of the warmest places in Europe in January.
With stunning rock formations, picturesque cliffs, and some of the most famous beaches in Europe, the Algarve is a pretty perfect place to visit in winter.
Plus, with warm temperatures around the mid to high teens, it’s also a great time for exploring. It definitely won’t be tanning weather (although, you can get that as early as April), and you will need a jacket for the evening.
But, you can explore the beaches crowd-free, go on relaxing walks without getting sunburned, and experience the delightful prices of the low season.
Plus, have you tasted Portuguese cuisine? If not, you’re in for a treat! Think fresh sardines, hearty stews (ask for the cataplana, it’s delicious), delicious pork dishes, seafood rice, and steak sandwiches. And that’s before you’ve even got onto the tasty pastel de nata!
Trust me, if you visit the Algarve in January, you won’t be disappointed.

6. Crete, Greece
Average Temperature: 14°C
The Greek Islands are fantastic and Crete, being the largest of them, offers a lot to its visitors. It’s the most southerly island. If you’re looking for the warmest places in January in Europe and Greece is high on your bucket list, I highly recommend Crete.
It’s a very varied island though. Unless you’re going to spend at least 2 weeks (and you’ll still need more time really) road-tripping, you’re going to need to come back.
But one of the things I love so much about Greece is that it’s a place you can return to again and again and always see something new.
In Crete, you can visit one side of the island and have a completely different experience from visiting the other! Crete has two airports: Chania and Heraklion. Heraklion is the capital of the island.
Here’s where you’ll find most of the history including the stunning Konossos temples and Crete’s beautiful old town. In comparison, Chania is much more about natural beauty and relaxation.
There is still some history though with a pretty impressive archaeological museum and fortress.

7. Madeira, Portugal
Average Temperature: 15°C
Frequently described as the Hawaii of Europe, Madeira has recently gained a lot of attention from travel and outdoor lovers all over the world.
It has some of the best hikes in Portugal (and in Europe), and it effortlessly combines scenic drives, unusual beaches, and delightful Portuguese culture.
It also benefits from almost year-round sunshine. January is one of the coldest months of the year, but this is ideal as the island is perfect for outdoor adventure. If you’ve ever been hiking in the boiling heat, you’ll know what a relief slightly milder weather is!
Also, if you’re looking to travel to Madeira for New Year and then remain on the island until January, then you’re in for a treat. Madeira hosts one of the top fireworks displays in Europe, so it’s well worth a visit in the winter months.
8. Lanzarote, Spain
Average Temperature: 20°C
Another of the fantastic Spanish Islands, Lanzarote is definitely one of the warmest places in January in Europe. With average high temperatures hovering around a pleasant 20°C, it’s a fantastic destination for those looking to escape the winter chill.
It’s one of the warmest destinations on this list and one of the most beautiful.
The unique landscapes are, once again, shaped by volcanic activity giving the island a rich variety of things to do for outdoor lovers. The charming white-washed villages, like Teguise and Haría, add a touch of traditional Spanish charm (and also kind of remind me of a Greek Island!).
Plus, the island’s artistic side is pretty evident everywhere, with quirky sculptures, cute towns, and museums scattered around.
On top of that, Lanzarote is a haven for foodies. You can’t leave without trying some local tapas and sipping on a glass of Spanish wine.
So, if you’re looking for a winter break that’s not your typical snow-covered scene, Lanzarote in January might just be your ticket to the sun, adventure, and some seriously good vibes.
9. Malaga, Spain
Average Temperature: 17°C
Now, let’s head north and back to Spain’s mainland and visit Malaga. This southern city is certainly not as hot as the Canary Islands, but I still think it’s one of the best warm places in Europe to visit in January.
Despite being labelled as a beach break, the city has a rich history. You can explore well-preserved architecture like the Alcazaba Fortress and the majestic Malaga Cathedral. But it’s not all about history — Malaga knows how to blend the old with the new!
Take a stroll along the vibrant Muelle Uno waterfront, lined with shops, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere. The Picasso Museum is also a must for art enthusiasts and is home to some artistic masterpieces.
Another good thing about visiting Malaga in January is that the city tends to have some really cheap flights from London or other destinations in Europe. I’ve seen direct flights from Stansted to Malaga for around £30 return in January which I don’t think is too bad for a bit of winter sun!
10. Palermo, Italy
Average Temperature: 15°C
Sicily is right next to Malta. So, given my enthusiasm for the little hidden gem, you can imagine how I feel about its Italian neighbour! Palermo in January is beautiful and, once again, so underrated. You’ll find a pleasant 15°C during the daytime and lots to do here.
The bustling markets like Ballarò and Vucciria are well worth a visit, especially if you love street food. Then, for history lovers, you can visit Palermo’s fascinating cathedral or simply explore the historic streets, and drink in the architecture with the stunning Mount Etna in the background.
If you’re a fan of vibrant street life, Palermo won’t disappoint. January brings fewer crowds, allowing you to soak in the local vibe without the hustle.
January might not be peak beach weather, but the coastal views are still breathtaking, especially at spots like Mondello. And let’s not forget the food – Palermo (and Italy in general) takes its cuisine seriously.
Try delicious dishes like arancini, cannoli, carbonara, and fresh seafood. You could even grab a cheeky gelato, and eat it in the winter sunshine.
11. Gran Canaria, Spain
Average Temperature: 22°C
I’m going to continue to reiterate how the Canary Islands in winter are Europe’s best-kept secret. Gran Canaria temperatures are hovering around a toasty 22°C in January. That’s almost tanning weather. In winter! It’s without a doubt one of the warmest places in Europe in January.
With the beautiful beaches of Playa del Inglés or the dramatic landscapes of Maspalomas, there’s a lot to do in Gran Canaria too. Winter is the perfect time to do it, without the hot sun beating down on you.
The island is a haven for adventure seekers. You can hike through lush mountains, explore charming villages like Teror, and visit beautiful National Parks. If you’d rather just relax, however, you can unwind in one of the many spa resorts or unique hotels.
It’s also worth checking out Las Palmas, the lively capital, with its collection of streets, shops, and authentic restaurants, perfect for ordering as much tapas as you can eat!
12. Mallorca, Spain
Average Temperature: 15°C
Okay, we’ve already talked quite a lot about the gorgeous Canary Islands, but what about the Balearics? Well, they’re definitely not to be forgotten, with their lush beaches, beautiful greenery, and vibrant towns and cities.
The most popular and visited of the Balearic Islands is arguably Mallorca. It does become a bit of a party island in the summer months with resorts like Ibiza being a haven for those who love to dance (and drink!).
But the winter brings a much calmer atmosphere. With the exception of New Year’s Eve, of course!
The island is surprisingly mild in January. You’ll find average temperatures of around 15°C during the day, and the quieter time of year really allows Mallorca’s authenticity to shine.
Wander through the historic streets of Palma with their cobblestones and traditional restaurants. Climb up to the Bellver Castle for panoramic views over the city or go hiking in the winding trails of the Tramuntana Mountains.
It’s the perfect time to savour the local life. whether it’s enjoying a quiet coffee in a cobblestone square or relishing the freshest seafood at a seaside taverna.
13. Lisbon, Portugal
Average Temperature: 15°C
I love Lisbon. I think it’s honestly one of the best (and warmest) European cities and January is a great time to visit. Aside from the smaller crowds and lower prices, Lisbon just has such a serene feel to it once the Christmas madness is over.
The Christmas markets are gone but the decorations are still lingering, the air is fresh and crisp, and the tram rattles around the quiet city centre taking locals to their favourite coffee shops.
January is a great time to explore the vast history of the Portuguese capital. Climb up to the historic Sao Jorge Castle, admire the views from the Belem Tower, and marvel at the intricate architecture of the Jerónimos Monastery.
I also highly recommend taking a day trip to Sintra. It’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in Portugal, and well worth a trip in the winter months without the crowds.
14. Nice, France
Average Temperature: 14°C
The south of France is often thought of as a fancy and rather expensive destination to visit. And, to be frank, this isn’t far off the mark! Nonetheless, January makes an ideal time to visit if you want a more affordable trip to the country’s glitzy coastline.
Nice maintains a mild climate in January, with average temperatures of around 14°C. It’s not hot, but also not cold weather, ideal for going for a walk on the city’s beaches, strolling along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, or exploring the narrow streets of the old town.
Nice in January offers a perfect blend of cultural exploration and relaxation. The museums, like the Marc Chagall National Museum, will appeal to art enthusiasts, while food lovers will adore the vibrant markets, local eateries, and authentic coffee shops.
15. Valencia, Spain
Average Temperature: 15°C
Spain is easily winning the tally for the warmest places in Europe in January and Valencia is next under the spotlight. This is the most northerly part of Spain on this list and it’s such a gem if you love culture.
Valencia’s winters are mild with average temperatures around 15°C. The Turia Gardens, usually a bustling hub, are much more peaceful in the winter months, and you can go on a bike ride or stroll around the bare foliage.
The beach, while not exactly suitable for sunbathing, offers another fantastic place for a stroll.
If you prefer indoor activities, don’t forget to visit the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. The aquarium here is one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Then, if you enjoy exploring the culture of a city, you’ve got to pay a visit to the historic Silk Exchange, admire the rich architecture of the Valencia Cathedral, explore the vibrant central market and sample seasonal produce.
16. The Azores, Portugal
Average Temperature: 17°C
The Azores is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. The stunning greenery, the lush forests, the enchanting hiking trails, and the diverse range of islands of the archipelago make this one of the best places to visit in Europe in January.
The islands are enchanting. You can go hiking, biking, do water sports, or go whale watching, explore the beautiful coastline with black beaches to rival Iceland, and discover cascading waterfalls.
January unveils a more peaceful side to the Azores, and there’s a high chance that you’ll have the volcanic craters and picturesque lakes to yourself!
As well as natural activities, the Azores is also home to a great selection of traditional villages. These charming places have winding cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and timeless charm. This will also give you the best excuse to taste lots of authentic cuisine.
Be sure to try the Cozido das Furnas, a slow-cooked stew using the natural heat of volcanic activity.
17. Split, Croatia
Average Temperature: 12°C
Throughout my road trip through Croatia, Split was my favourite destination. Well, apart from the gorgeous Plitvice National Park. There was just something about the narrow streets, pale-coloured stone, and buildings that looked like they were from another time.
It had a similar vibe to Rabat in Malta. Coupled with the beautiful historic buildings, gorgeous coastline, and proximity to some of the most stunning National Parks in Europe, make this a great place to visit.
In winter, the weather is cooler than in the high season. But you won’t find snow and the temperatures are still likely in the low teens. This makes it the ideal time to wander around the quiet streets of Split, admiring the architecture and exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The famous Diocletian’s Palace is a particular gem, and the quietness of the winter months means you’ll be able to explore this in peace. Don’t forget to climb the tower and take a panoramic photograph of Split’s coastline. Then, head back down and see it for yourself!
The Riva waterfront, although quieter, still exudes a timeless charm. It’s an ideal time to sip coffee in a coffee shop overlooking the waters or indulge in fresh seafood and hearty Dalmatian dishes without the usual queues.
Then, if you enjoy the outdoors, head over to the Marjan Forest Park. Its winding trails and panoramic views offer a refreshing escape for nature lovers.
18. Sardinia, Italy
Average Temperature: 14°C
There’s a reason that Italy is one of the most popular places to travel in Europe. It’s such a culturally rich, and beautiful place, with stunning beaches, delicious food, and incredible history. Sardinia is one of the country’s largest islands, and January is a fantastic time to visit.
It’s a pretty diverse place in itself. The rugged landscapes, normally bustling with sun-seekers, are much calmer and more pristine in the winter months.
You can stroll along the pristine beaches of Costa Smeralda without crashing into sunbathers, or go hiking in the rugged trails of the Gennargentu National Park without breaking too much of a sweat.
There’s lots for history lovers too. The ancient Nuraghe structures are well worth a visit along with the Cathedral of Cagliari, and the sites of Nora. And, of course, culturally, Italy is always a treat with delicious food, refreshing wines, and brilliant museums and galleries to explore.
19. Seville, Spain
Average Temperature: 16°C
Seville is easily one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Nestled in the south, it alludes to a kind of historic elegance with beautiful parks, plazas, architecture, and food.
It’s also one of the warmest places in Europe in January. You’ll find average temperatures of around 16°C, and the perfect atmosphere to explore its streets.
The historic Alcazar, Giralda Tower, and awe-inspiring Cathedral are fantastic examples of centuries of Andalusian history. You also have to visit the charming Barrio Santa Cruz, with its narrow alleys and hidden squares, providing a peaceful setting for strolls.
Then, you can’t visit Seville without exploring the culture. Wander the city streets, head to the intimate tablaos to enjoy the passionate flamenco dance, and indulge in the fantastic gastronomic scene.
Local delights like tapas, salmorejo and churros with chocolate, are the perfect winter treat. Wash it all down with a glass of warm cider.
20. Marseille, France
Average Temperature: 14°C
Last but not least we have Marseille. This charming city is also located along the French Riviera. But, it’s a little more traditional and a little less flashy than Nice.
Marseille offers a delightful place to visit in January in Europe and the pleasant weather, once again, provides a grateful escape from the crowds.
You’ll find moderate temperatures in Marseille in January. It’ll probably be around the low teens, but this is ideal for exploring the city streets and taking a few day trips into the city’s beautiful surroundings. Verdod Gorge is so peaceful at this time of year and the amphitheatre of the nearby Nimes is much less crowded.
Back in the city itself, be sure to visit the Old Port. Usually bustling with summer activities, it takes on a serene charm in winter.
You’ll also want to visit the iconic Notre Dame de la Garde, stroll through historic districts like Le Panier, and explore the city’s museums, from the MUCEM to the Marseille History Museum.
In the evenings, it can get a little chilly, but this is the perfect time to explore Marseille’s culinary scene. Head to one of the many authentic restaurants in the centre and enjoy a bowl of steaming bouillabaisse or coq au vin, and a mug of creamy hot chocolate or mulled wine.
It’s the perfect combination of winter sun during the day and cosy winter vibes in the evening!

While January might not be your first choice of places to visit in Europe, there is so much choice and, in my opinion, it’s a great time to explore.
You’ll find quiet streets, very reasonable prices, and temperatures still in their 20’s if you know where to look!
