If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in the UK, there are plenty of charming cities to choose from. If you’re looking for a cosy weekend away, the UK is a great place to escape the mundane routine of everyday life. From the historic streets of Edinburgh to the picturesque streets of Bath, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite city breaks in the UK.
The best thing about city breaks in the UK is that they don’t always have to have the busy feel of traditional cities. Many cities here are pretty small and feel more like a large-town feel than a bustling metropolis. Plus, many have gorgeous countryside surroundings, ideal for combining a city break with a little walk in the woods.
Where is the most romantic place in the UK?
In my opinion, the UK is full of hidden gems and romantic places. There’s no shortage of incredible beaches, wonderful English countryside, pretty villages, and so much more. However, many of the cities in the UK offer such a romantic vibe too. Especially if you know where to look.
Some of the most romantic places in the UK include:
- The Lake District: Known for its stunning natural beauty, the Lake District is one of the best places to visit if you love the great outdoors. There are many hiking, boating, and picnics opportunities, making it the ideal spot for a romantic getaway.
- Bath: A city known for its Roman Baths, 18th-century architecture, and Jane Austen connections, Bath is a unique blend of history and relaxation. Enjoy a soak in the thermal waters, take a stroll in the Royal Crescent, and indulge in some afternoon tea.
- Edinburgh: With its historic hilltop castle, charming cobblestone streets, and stunning views, Edinburgh is one of the most romantic destinations in the UK. The city is home to many romantic restaurants, and charming B&Bs and is perfect for exploring on foot.
- The Cotswolds: This picturesque region of England, known for its thatched-roof cottages, rolling hills, and quaint villages, makes for a perfect romantic getaway. Take a walk along the countryside, visit charming pubs and enjoy a traditional English country experience.
- London: Of course, England’s capital had to be mentioned on this list! There are lots of things for couples to do in London with many romantic attractions like the London Eye, The Shard, the West End, and much more.
These are just a few of the many romantic destinations in the UK. There’s so much to see and do, and the UK is perfect for couples who want a romantic and unique holiday.
The 11 Best UK city breaks for couples
So, without further ado, these are the perfect cities for your next romantic getaway. Whether you’re looking for history or charm these will whisk you and your partner off your feet.
1. Cambridge
This is easily one of my favourite places to visit in England. It’s also right on my doorstep!
Located about 80 miles (129 km) north of London, the city is most famous for the University of Cambridge, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world.
But, the city is actually home to 31 colleges. These are scattered throughout the city centre, making the entirety of Cambridge a haven for academists and those who love architecture because, let’s face it, all of the buildings are beautiful.
Some of the most famous colleges include King’s College, with its fantastic chapel, and Trinity College, which is the largest college in the University and home to the famous Wren Library.

But Cambridge is much more than just its academic heritage. There is so much to do in Cambridge and it’s surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England, You can explore the historic streets, discover the many museums, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum, or go punting along the River Cam.
Cambridge also has many historic buildings besides all the collages including the Round Church, and the Eagle Pub, where scientists Francis Crick and James Watson announced their discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953.

2. Oxford
Oxford, like Cambridge, is mostly known for being the home of the University of Oxford, another of the UK’s (and the world’s) oldest and most esteemed universities. But, there’s also a tonne of history here. We’ve been on several day trips to Oxford and it is one of our favourite cities in the country.
The history here is fantastic. Its buildings and landmarks, such as the Bodleian Library, the Christ Church, and the Radcliffe Camera, are very impressive. You can spend a whole day in Oxford just exploring the architecture.

The city is also known for its many museums. My favourites are the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology – a fantastic free attraction in Oxford – and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. It has no shortage of beautiful gardens and parks, such as Christ Church Meadow and University Parks and is a paradise for Harry Potter fans.
It also has a pretty good nightlife and a vibrant cultural scene. There are theatre performances, music venues, and festivals throughout the year. It’s a great choice for couples because you can wander around the city, visit cute coffee shops, and go punting on the river with a glass of champagne.

3. Bath
The City of Bath is another of my favourite cities in England. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its Georgian architecture.
It’s particularly well known for the well-preserved Roman Baths that give the city its name. This complex of hot springs and bathhouses is one of the city’s most popular attractions and one of the UK’s most important historical sites,
The city also boasts plenty more beautiful buildings including Bath Abbey, a beautiful Gothic church, and the Royal Crescent, a series of terraced houses forming a crescent shape.

You’ll also find plenty of museums in Bath, such as the Fashion Museum, the Museum of Bath at Work, and the Jane Austen Centre, which is dedicated to the life and works of the famous novelist.
Spending a weekend in Bath is the ideal way to get away with your other half because there’s just so much to do there. As well as exploring the city centre, there’s also so much to see in the surrounding countryside including the beautiful Lacock Abbey and the Prior Park Landscaped Gardens.

4. York
York is an incredibly historic city. The most famous building in the city, the York Minster is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in all of Northern Europe.
As well as the minster, you can also walk the York City Walls, a fantastic free thing to do in York that offers fantastic views over the city and surrounding countryside. I also recommend visiting the picturesque Shambles, for a quaint and romantic (albeit a little busy) atmosphere.
If you want a quiet time here, you’ll have to visit really early morning. But it’s worth a visit even with the crowds, especially if you’re a Harry Potter fan. I can never resist a chance to go inside ‘The Shop That Can’t Be Named.‘

There’s a lot to enjoy in York. We spent a few days exploring the city and had so much fun. You can take a scenic boat trip on the River Ouse, visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, and explore the Castle Museum.
I also love Clifford’s Castle on the outskirts of the city. The views from the top are fantastic, and, despite being a pretty small castle, it’s very interesting and has recently been rebuilt.
If you enjoy exploring the great outdoors, you’ll also love York’s proximity to great hiking destinations like the Yorkshire Dales. This beautiful landscape has some of the UK’s best hiking trails, and it is pretty easy to combine a city break to York with a romantic countryside getaway.

5. Brighton
If you fancy combining a UK city break for couples with a trip to the seaside, then you’re in luck. Brighton is easily the best of both worlds and you can relax on the beach during the day and head to the streets in the evening.
Located on the south coast of England, Brighton is known for its panoramic seafront and charming beach huts. It’s a great place for scenic walks along the beach or enjoying an ice cream while taking in the sea views.

You can also enjoy Brighton Pier while you’re there. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve enjoyed spending an evening in the arcade with my partner. We typically spend our time playing the slot machines, winning tickets at ‘Deal or No Deal’, or competing with each other at air hockey. It’s a very fun way to spend an evening on the coast in England.
But aside from arcades and the beach, there are plenty of other things to do in Brighton. Visit the many art galleries, museums, and theatres around the city, explore the Royal Pavillion, and for those who enjoy the outdoors, there are plenty of parks and gardens for a romantic stroll or picnic.
It’s a lovely place to visit in the summer months.
There are a variety of spas and wellness centres that offer you the chance to relax and unwind. Plus, for those who enjoy a good party, Brighton has a vibrant nightlife scene. There are a wide range of bars, clubs, and live music venues, offering a variety of options for a fun (and potentially messy) night out.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly talk about the best UK city breaks for couples without mentioning one of the greatest cities in the world. London is a wonderful destination for couples, offering a wide range of romantic activities to suit all interests and budgets.
You could take a stroll along the South Bank, admiring the great views of the Thames and iconic landmarks such as the London Eye, Tower Bridge, and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Or enjoy a dinner cruise on the Thames, where you can admire the city’s famous landmarks. Then, visit the top of the Shard, one of London’s tallest buildings, for breathtaking views of the city skyline.

Lovers of the outdoors could go for a picnic in Hyde Park, admire the Italian Gardens or take a boat ride on the Serpentine Lake. Also, visit the Kew Gardens, take a stroll in the gardens and admire the Victorian Palm House.
Alternatively, one of my personal favourite places in London is Camden Market. It’s one of the cheapest places to eat in London, but also one of the most delicious. You could spend hours wandering around the different stalls, have a drink in a rooftop bar, and finish the night listening to live music.

Manchester is a very diverse city and there are lots of things to do here. You can take a stroll around the city centre and visit the Manchester Art Gallery, which has a diverse collection of British and European art and hosts temporary exhibitions.

8. Ventnor
Now, this is the first destination on this list that’s outside of mainland England. But, in my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful.
By far one of the best UK city breaks for couples, Ventnor is easily one of the best places to visit on the Isle of Wight. It’s a picturesque seaside destination, with striking coastal views and great sunsets. It has one of the best beaches on the island, perfect for an evening stroll.
Also, visit the Ventnor Heritage Centre, which showcases the history of the town, including its Victorian past and its connection to the dinosaur fossils found on the island.

The nearby town of Shanklin is also well with a visit with its picturesque village feel and thatched cottages. You could also pop into one of my favourite places on the island, Shanklin Chine.
This stunning gorge is absolutely beautiful and has a surprisingly tropical vibe, considering it’s in the UK! It also lights up with bright lights in the evening which makes it even more gorgeous.
And don’t forget to pay a visit to the infamous Needles, a rocky outcrop, on the western tip of the island. Enjoy the beautiful lighthouse, the old battery, and the chair lift that provides a panoramic view of the surroundings.
When you get peckish from all that exploring, head back to one of Ventnor’s many seafood restaurants and enjoy the local catch of the day and a bottle of wine.
My favourite restaurant is the Spyglass Inn, a fantastic place that I visited with my parents when I was little and have returned to every time I visit the island.

9. Edinburgh
From the very south of England, right up to Scotland, Edinburgh is a beautiful and historic city. There are many things to do during a weekend in Edinburgh – we’ve visited twice and could still easily go back and explore a third time.
I recommend visiting Edinburgh Castle and climbing up to Castle Hill for the stunning views that you can see below. You can also walk through the city’s historic Old Town, where you can explore the narrow cobblestone streets and admire the medieval and Georgian architecture.

Next, take a stroll through Princes Street Gardens, which offers beautiful views of the castle and the city’s skyline. Explore the Royal Mile, which is home to many historical landmarks and traditional Scottish shops – perfect for couples who enjoy history and culture.
Then, visit the National Museum of Scotland. This museum features a wide range of exhibitions and displays showcasing Scotland’s history, culture, and natural history.
Outdoor lovers will also love Edinburgh due to the extinct volcano that’s located in the city. You can climb to the top of this for stunning views over the surroundings.
Lastly, if you’re visiting Edinburgh in winter, the Christmas markets are spectacular. It’s definitely romantic to ride on the Ferris wheel with a glass of mulled wine and admire the city all lit up.

10. Newcastle
Newcastle is a vibrant city located in the North East of England, and easily one of the most weekend getaways in the UK. It’s known for its lively atmosphere, cultural attractions, and beautiful river views.
You can take a romantic walk along the Quayside, which offers picturesque views of the River Tyne and the iconic Tyne Bridge. For those interested in music take a trip to the nearby town of Gateshead. Here, you’ll find Sage Gateshead, a music venue that offers a wide range of performances and events.

For a dose of the outdoors, take a stroll through the Jesmond Dene, a beautiful park that has a range of walking trails, picnic areas, and a playground. Also visit Newcastle Castle, a historic fortress that has been standing for almost 1000 years, perfect for couples who enjoy history and culture.
Once you’ve finished exploring the history, take a cruise along the river, with dinner and drinks. It’s a great way to enjoy the views of the city and spend the perfect evening with your other half.

11. Bristol
This colourful city located in the west of England is another great place to visit for couples in the UK. It’s one of the street art capitals of the UK, with a wealth of artwork all around the city – it is home to Banksy after all!
As well as that, it’s also one of the most unique cities in the UK. We recently spent a day in Bristol and it had a different vibe to many of the other places we’ve visited. There are shipping containers instead of historical buildings, and contemporary museums everywhere.

One of Bristol’s main attractions is a huge ship, the SS Great Britain which was the largest passenger ship in the world back in 1845 and it literally changed the world. Today, the ship is a museum and you can explore the deck and underneath the ship to learn about its history.
As well as that, I recommend climbing to the top of Cabot Hill for wonderful views over the city, exploring the impressive Bristol Cathedral, and heading up to the Clifton Suspension Bridge for more great views and a chance to climb into a cave tunnel into a gorge.
