But the autumn months bring out a whole new side to the country that’s really quite magical.

1. Almonte, Ontario
Average Temperature: 10-15°C
If you’re looking to visit Canada in autumn, Almonte Ontario is the place to go. It’s less than an hour west of the nation’s capital, making it one of the best day trips from Ottawa to take in the fall!
This charming small town is set along a picturesque river with a grand waterfall. There are so many fun things to do in Almonte in the fall.
Wandering downtown you’ll find plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants serving incredible food. Almonte is home to some great shops that sell everything from local artisan goods to home décor.
One of the most unique attractions is Hummingbird Chocolate, which runs tours and chocolate tastings on weekends. Plus, across the street is another unique stop, Vodkow, which is a dairy distillery.
For fall colours, check out the views from Metcalfe Geoheritage Park. Another great place to soak in the changing fall foliage is on the hiking trails at Mill of Kintail Conservation Area.
How to get there: Take Highway 417 west out of Ottawa and exit at Regional Road 49 towards Almonte. It’s approximately 40 minutes from Ottawa.
2. Banff, Alberta

While you may think of Banff as a summer destination, autumn is actually also one of the best times to visit this part of Canada!
Although snow usually starts to arrive higher up during autumn, most of the hiking trails are still accessible during this time.
The mountain vistas are especially beautiful covered in fall colours. September is also golden larch season in Alberta, when the larch trees magically light up the parks in a sea of gold, as their needles turn bright yellow for a fleeting period.
The days can also still be very warm and sunny during autumn. Average daytime temperatures are generally between 10-17° Celsius (50-63° Fahrenheit), but it’s also not uncommon to get 25°C+ (77°F+) days in September and early October!
And, before the snow arrives, autumn is still a great time to see the vibrant turquoise colour of Banff’s famous lakes like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.
Additionally, you can explore the trails in Banff and Jasper National Parks and drive the iconic Icefields Parkway through the two parks. Plus, BC’s Yoho, Kootenay and Mount Assiniboine parks are also within easy reach of Banff.
The best way to get to Banff is by flying into Calgary, which is a 1.5-hour drive away.
3. Kananaskis, Peter Lougheed National Park

The quaint town of Tobermory is around a 3.5 to 4-hour drive north of Toronto in Ontario. Located on the shores of Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, it’s best known for the majestic Niagara Escarpment, crystal-clear water, and the Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Some of the most notable attractions here are the famous Grotto (a natural sea cave filled with sparkling water), the Lion’s Head lookout, and the 65-foot Observation Tower for incredible panoramic views.
This is the ideal place for a weekend autumn escape. With a myriad of hiking trails winding along the escarpment, through diverse forests, and to some spectacular cliffside viewpoints, where you can take in the best of Ontario’s fall colours.
What’s most striking about this area in autumn is the contrast of red, orange and gold hues alongside the vibrant turquoise colour of the lake.
Plus, walking through the forest during autumn can be an enchanting experience. You’ll be surrounded by gently falling leaves and the sun shining through the canopy of gold.
The weather at this time of year is also very pleasant for exploring the area, with average daytime highs of 12-18° Celsius (54-65° Fahrenheit) during the peak fall season.
5. Nova Scotia
Average Temperature: 10-16°C
Nova Scotia is a wonderful destination to visit in autumn in Canada. In September, the weather is still warm, with temperatures averaging around 20-25 degrees Celsius. By October the fall foliage starts to show, with yellow, orange and red leaves on trees everywhere around the province.
The best places to go in Nova Scotia to see the fall foliage are Cape Breton and Kejimkujik National Park.
After Labor Day, Nova Scotia becomes pretty much tourist-free. You can enjoy the hiking trails, and beautiful sites such as Peggy’s Cove, Mahone Bay or Digby, without the crowds.
In September you can still go whale watching in the Digby Neck, where you can mostly see Humpback and Minke whales. Stay overnight in Digby and try the local delicacy, the scallops, which are a staple of the food in Nova Scotia.
In September you will also stumble upon the harvest at the vineyards around Nova Scotia. Don’t miss a tasting at Grand Pre Winery, where you can taste the unique L’Acadie wine made with grapes that only grow here.
6. Niagara Falls

On top of exploring the Niagara Parkway, the highlight of a trip here is the mighty Niagara Falls and its various attractions. This includes the Skylon Tower, the Journey Behind the Falls, and taking a Niagara City Cruise.
Getting to Niagara is easy. It’s a 30-minute drive from Buffalo, New York, or about 1.5 hours from Toronto, Ontario. Both cities have international airports.
7. Toronto, Ontario

Just a 3-hour drive north of Toronto, you will find Canada’s first provincial park one of the largest in the country, Algonquin.
Stretching for 2,946 square miles (7,630 km²), with over 1,500 lakes and 745 miles of streams, Algonquin Provincial Park is one of the best places in Canada for canoeing, camping and fishing. In fact, the most popular activity here is canoe camping.
This comprises a multi-day paddle route through the park, carrying the canoe between bodies of water and camping at lakeside campsites each night.
And there’s no better time to go than in early autumn when the water is at its warmest, the temperatures are milder, the park’s colours are most vibrant, and bug season is well and truly over!
With daytime averages of 11-18° Celsius (52-65° Fahrenheit), it’s a particularly comfortable time to explore the park. But don’t be surprised if you also get some summer-like days during this time!
The fall colours which light up Algonquin at the end of September and early October are some of the best in the country, with plenty of Red Maple and Sugar Maple trees lighting up the landscape with brilliant red leaves, amidst the yellow-orange Aspens and Tamaracks.
