21. Watch the New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Did you know, that about 3 million people turn up to watch the Thames New Year’s Eve fireworks every year? It’s the biggest fireworks display in Europe, lasts about 15 minutes and consists of around 70,000 fireworks. It used to be free, but these days, tickets to the big event cost £20 each.

new years eve fireworks

Everyone crowds along the Thames riverbank as Big Ben starts the countdown. Then stare into the sky in awe as it’s lit up with dazzling lights and sparkles flying out of the iconic London Eye itself.

This is all coordinated with some of the most popular songs of the year and followed by a chorus of Auld Lang Syne, another wonderful British Christmas tradition.

New Years Eve in London

Listening to that classic sung by 3 million people from all around the world, lined up along the Thames bank to see in the New Year, is a wonderful experience.

It feels almost as if everyone’s united. It’s truly one of the best places to spend New Year around the globe and if you are going to be in London at Christmas, I can’t recommend it enough.

22. Watch the New Year’s Day Parade

If the London Christmas spectacle hasn’t dazzled you so far, or you just can’t get enough, then the New Year’s Day parade has got to be the icing on the cake!

A parade to rival Macy’s Thanksgiving parade in New York, have you ever wanted to see a giant blow-up London guard waddling down the West End streets?

With over 10,000 participants from around the world, the parade is huge with music, floats, and the finale of the London International Choir Festival. Plus, working to support great charities across London,

The Parade has so far raised £1.5 million, so as well as having a wonderful day, you can also do a good deed. One of the best British Christmas traditions!

23. Listen to The King’s Speech

Another great British Christmas tradition is to listen to His Majesty the King’s annual Christmas Day speech. When I was growing up, we all used to sit in the living room and listen to the Queen before we were allowed to open our presents!

So many people around the world love the English Royal family so, if you are in London for Christmas, definitely make an effort to switch on the television for the speech.

What to Expect in London at Christmas

So, now you know the best things to do in London at Christmas, here are a few of the top things to expect if you’re visiting the city in winter.

Expect it to be Busy

London city centre is a bit manic at the best of times but the run-up to Christmas is complete and utter chaos! People rushing about doing last-minute shopping, crowded trains, queues everywhere, utterly nowhere to park and traffic jams for days are just a few of the things you can anticipate.

Covent Garden in London at Christmas

I know I’m not exactly selling it (I expect most capital cities to be a bit like this at Christmas!) but, despite all this madness, London is nice to visit at this time of year.

All dolled up with pretty lights, carol singers, tinselled trees and festive markets, London is undoubtedly beautiful. But if you go, definitely prepare for crowds.

Expect it to be Chilly and Potentially Wet

Unfortunately, one of the things London is known for (and not just in December) is being cold and soggy. The only thing you can really do about this is to come prepared.

Christmas tree in London

Bring a travel-sized umbrella, raincoat, and hooded coat. Also wear layers, sensible shoes, and wrap up warm! Check my guide for what to pack for travelling Europe in winter.

Expect a lot of Alcohol

Alcohol is a very important part of British Christmas culture. A lot of Brits see the festive season as an excuse to drink a LOT of booze. On average the Great British Nation will consume as much as 6 billion units of alcohol over the festive season!

While I don’t advise drinking an excessive amount, some of the classic Christmas drinks are worth a try if you’re in London. Port is not actually from London but is widely regarded as an English drink. Likewise, Champagne is very popular in the festive season. Other traditional beverages include bucks fizz, mulled wine or cider, Irish coffee, hot butter rum or eggnog.

Expect a Delicious English Christmas dinner

One of my favourite things about Christmas has got to be the food. The traditional HUGE meal for Christmas dinner and then snacks, bubble and squeak and leftover turkey for the rest of the week! And I guarantee everyone always buys way too much food!

christmas day dinner
Christmas dinner is delicious

Many pubs around the city will serve a delicious Christmas dinner on the big day itself and the dates leading up to it. This usually consists of roast turkey, roasties, parsnips, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, stuffing, lashings of gravy and cranberry sauce.

Then, top it all off with a rich, alcohol-soaked Christmas pudding, and mince pies with cream, hot custard and brandy butter. Absolutely delicious!

Top Tip: If you do want to eat Christmas dinner in London, be sure to book a spot in advance. Restaurants get fully booked very quickly.

Expect Epic Boxing Day sales

London is a great place to go shopping any time of year but after Christmas when everybody is off work and almost all the prices are discounted, you can certainly pick up a fab bargain!

Covent Garden at Christmas
Christmas shopping is one of the best things to do in London at Christmas

Head over to well-known department stores like Harrods and Selfridges and huge shopping centres like Westfield. But also be sure to check out the cute boutique, designer, vintage mix of shops at Covent Garden or the famous London Christmas shopping hotspots (and Monopoly board favourites) of Regent Street, Bond Street and Oxford Street.

Top Tip: The sales last well into January but if you really want to get a good deal, it’s best to head over as soon as Christmas day is over. However, everyone else also has the same idea, so once again, expect slightly mad crowds!
