When I travel I always feel that there are some countries that are great at certain things. Greece is great for island escapes, Norway is fantastic for hiking, and Italy is stunning for food. However, the US is one of those countries that has a little of everything. You can go for a fantastic summer break, but some of the best winter getaways in the US are completely spectacular.

Winter in the US is a mixture in Itself. The southern States are great if you want some winter sun, whereas, in some of the more northerly destinations, you’ll find scenes that look like they’re from a Christmas postcard! I love how varied everything is and you can literally find some of the best places to visit in winter in the United States.

The Best Winter Getaways in the US

So, whether you’re after snow or sunshine, these are some of the best getaways in the US in winter.

1. Key West, Florida

Average Temperature: 24°C (75°F)

Let’s start with some winter sun. Located at the southernmost tip of the United States, this tropical gem might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a winter getaway. However, Key West’s charm during the colder months is undeniable.

With average temperatures hovering around 24°C (75°F), it’s the perfect escape for those seeking a bit of sun without the intense heat.

2. New York City, New York

Average Temperature: 13°C (55°F)

I couldn’t write a list of the best winter getaways in the US and not include New York now, could I? In my opinion, New York City is always a good idea. But then again, I’ve always been a fan of big-city vibes – that’s why I love London so much! New York was also the first city I ever visited in the States, and it was for my 21st birthday, so I have a bit of a soft spot for it!

But, in complete contrast to the sunny summer vibes of my first visit, New York completely transforms in winter into a snowy wonderland. Some of the USA’s most famous Christmas attractions are in New York City. This includes ice-skating at the Rockefeller Centre, the beautiful Macys all lit up, and the displays along Fifth Avenue.

It’s also well worth going for a walk through Central Park in the winter months. With the frosty trees and snow-covered landscapes, you could easily take your Christmas card photo right there!

3. San Francisco, California

Average Temperature: 13°C (55°F)
