The 13 Warmest Places in Europe in March

Sharing is caring!

Looking for the warmest places in Europe in March? These are my favourite places to visit in March for that much-needed dose of winter sun!

March is a curious time of year. It’s not winter anymore, but it’s not quite spring either. It’s kind of that middle ground where sometimes it’s lovely weather and sometimes it’s pouring with rain!

So, it’s only natural that you might want to escape from that unpredictability and travel to some of the hottest places to visit in Europe in March.

As it happens, I love March. There are so many places that are great to travel to at this time of year. Not just in Europe, but all over the world. It’s not quite the wet season in Thailand, and it’s not quite the hurricane season in Mexico – yet it’s off-peak enough that the prices are lower.

Europe is just starting to come out of its wintery shell, but you can still find places to go skiing as well as places where you can bask in the warmth on a beach. Talk about a bit of everything!

So, if you’ve got itchy feet after the Christmas season and are looking for the warmest destinations to travel to in Europe in March, I’ve got you covered. Here are some of the top destinations for a bit of early spring sun.

1. Cyprus – 22ºC

A gorgeous little Mediterranean island located just south of Turkey, Cyprus is one of the warmest places in Europe in March. Averaging around 22 degrees, you’ll find glorious beaches, fascinating historical sites (like the Tomb of the Kings), and gorgeous nature.

In terms of culture, Cyprus has a rich and diverse heritage, with a mix of Greek, Turkish, and British influences. A couple of my favourite places on the island include the Ancient Kourion, Troodos Monasteries, and the House of Dionysus.

For nature lovers, head to Cape Greco or Aphrodite’s Rock and you won’t be disappointed.

The island is also known for its delicious cuisine, which is heavily influenced by Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern flavours. If you’ve ever had halloumi cheese, you’ll be in heaven! Gorge yourself on meze, moussaka, souvlaki, and as much fried halloumi as you can get your hands on.

2. The Canary Islands – 23ºC

Although technically not one place, the Canary Islands are a great place to visit in Europe in March. A total of seven Spanish islands located off the northwest coast of Africa, they offer a delightful dip into Spanish culture plus gorgeous beaches and breathtaking volcanic landscapes.

Lanzarote tends to be the hottest of the Canary Islands, reaching a toasty average of 23ºC in March followed by Tenerife and Fuerteventura at 22ºC.

For culture buffs, you can see history come alive in the form of festivals, traditions, and local cuisine, which is a fusion of African, Spanish, and indigenous flavours.

Plus, the landscapes of the Canary Islands are really something special. With its diverse natural scenery, which includes everything from black volcanic sands to lush green forests, and rugged mountain ranges, the islands are also great for outdoor activities.

You could go hiking up a volcano, diving in the ocean, or go surfing on the waves. Whether you’re a beach-goer, an outdoor enthusiast, or a culture lover, the Canary Islands have something to offer.

Almost invisible on a map, Malta is a tiny island in the Mediterranean located between Italy and Africa. It’s an incredibly varied island with great temperatures year-round. March is a great time for exploring the temples, natural wonders, and historic cities on the island.

8. Athens -17ºC

The capital of Greece needs no introduction. As one of the most romantic cities in Europe, it gets a fair amount of visitors throughout the year.

Hence why March is one of the best times to go to avoid the crowds. Plus, exploring a city in the basking heat can be pretty draining!

As one of the oldest cities in the world, it’s steeped in history and culture. There’s also so much to do in Athens. A trip to the Acropolis is an absolute must-see, but you can also visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion.

Temples in Athens, one of the warmest places in europe in march

Take a trip to the impressive Panathenaic Stadium, visit the Ancient Agora, and, if you have more than one day in Athens, even take a few day trips from the city. My favourite was the magnificent ancient Greek site of Delphi.

Athens also has a vibrant modern side, with a thriving food and drink scene, lively nightlife, and a range of shopping and entertainment options.

Sample all sorts of cuisine such as souvlaki, moussaka, and tzatziki, and be sure to check out the street food stalls for delicious little doughnut balls called lukumádes.

9. Lisbon – 17ºC

Last but not least, let’s explore the wonderful city that is Lisbon. The capital of Portugal, and the largest metropolis in the country, is an energetic city, full of yellow trams, cobbled streets, and pastel-coloured buildings.

Head down to the coast to visit the Belem Tower, see the spectacular Jeronimos Monastery, and wander the scenic Alfama district.

Another thing that’s well worth doing if you are visiting Lisbon is taking a trip to Sintra. This incredibly colourful town has one of my favourite buildings ever – Pena Palace. But also be sure to visit the Quinta da Regaleira and its curious well.

Easily one of the best places to visit in March, Lisbon is ideal for both culture buffs and lovers of history. With its gothic buildings and cute cafes full of pastries, you could easily spend a long weekend (or longer) here, soaking up the vibes.

This stunning little island of Rhodes is the first island I ever visited in Greece. It’s such a gorgeous place and the perfect mixture of history, culture, and great beaches.

In March, the temperatures are a very pleasant 17ºC – ideal for exploring the cobbled streets of the old town and visiting the museums and historical sites. You’ll even be able to walk up the hill to the Acropolis in Lindos without getting too hot!

While the sea might be slightly too cold to get in at this time of year, you can still enjoy many of the stunning beaches in Rhodes on foot.

I also highly recommend taking a trip to Seven Springs in Rhodes – this place is honestly beautiful and such a contrast from the coastal scenery on the island.

11. Antalya – 18ºC

One of the best things about visiting Antalya in March is you won’t have to deal with all of the crowds that visit this Turkish city in the summertime.

If you love history, this is another of the best places to visit in Europe in March. There are some fantastic places to visit in Antalya and some great spots just a short drive from the city too.

Antalya from the cable car

When we were there, we hired a driver for the day who took us around so many great historical sights. This included the ruins of Olympos and the Phaselis ruins south of Antalya, and we even went above the clouds to the peak of Mount Tahtali.

Plus, the old town of Antalya is gorgeous too, with cobbled streets, historic gates, castles, and mosques to explore. Plus, you have the beautiful Lara Beach nearby if you’re after a beach break.

To make things even better, if you visit at the start of the month, you’ll be able to attend the famous Las Fallas festival. The streets come alive with towering papier-mâché sculptures, parades, and fireworks displays. It’s a very exciting time to explore the city.

13. Split – 15ºC

Last but not least, we have Split. The combination of a beautiful old town, cobbled streets, narrow winding lanes, and stunning ocean views made this one of my favourite places to visit in Croatia.

There’s so much to see in Split. Climb to the top of Diocletian’s Palace for gorgeous views over the city, hike up the hill at Marjan Park for even more great views, and head down to the beach for a paddle in the ocean.

You can also spend quite a while just exploring the very picturesque streets of the old town. Don’t forget to take a day trip to the nearby town of Trogir while you’re there.

The weather is warming up and many popular destinations start to come out of their winter lull. The days are getting longer, and flowers start to bloom, making for a picturesque time to explore the cities and countryside.

Nonetheless, weather in Europe in March can be quite unpredictable and can vary greatly depending on where you visit. In some places, you might experience mild and sunny weather, while in others, you might encounter rain and chilly temperatures (or even snow).

However, March is far from peak tourist season in Europe, so you will definitely find lower crowds and lower prices for hotels and activities.
